Connor Logan, a 2012 graduate of the Saint Andrews School, was seriously injured in a car accident June 7th. He was in a coma and is now suffering from a traumatic brain injury. He spent two weeks in the Trauma ICU at Delray Beach Community Hospital and was then transferred to Atlanta’s Shepherd Center on June 22. Shepherd Center is one of the top rehabilitation hospitals in the nation, specializing in medical treatment, research, and rehabilitation for people with spinal cord injury or brain injury. He is undergoing intensive medical care and rehabilitation and therapy.  This phase includes everything from monitoring drug therapies and nutrition to getting Connor mobile and out of bed as soon as possible. Connor Logan attended Gulf Stream School through middle school and won numerous athletic awards while he was there. Gulf Stream School, a Pre-K through 8th grade school in Palm Beach County Florida, has a mandatory after school sports program.  It was through this sports program that he was introduced to the game of lacrosse. Connor and his older brother Ryan, now a junior at Florida State, fell in love with the game while playing for their school and the Delray Beach Riptide recreational program. Connor attended Saint Andrew’s School running cross country as well as playing soccer and lacrosse while there. He was named Palm Beach All County in lacrosse and soccer his senior year. He then received the Jerry Reese Sportsmanship Award, the highest Athletic Honor Awarded at Saint Andrew’s School. On August 25th, while tropical storm Isaac was making its way to south Florida, the community got together and held a Spaghetti Dinner Benefit to help defray some of the mounting medical bills Connor’s family has received during the past two months. A committee came together from friends, coworkers, and even a past student of Connor’s parents Kevin and Gina Logan. Kevin has been a teacher and is currently the Athletic & Activities Director at Atlantic High School. Gina has taught Special Education and English in Pennsylvania and at Atlantic High School for 30 years. They have given much to help every child that they have guided while in these roles. Julie Flaig the wife of Atlantic High School basketball coach, Brad Flaig conceived the idea to help raise community awareness and funds to help the Logans. Committee members included Geanin Wester, Marian Weatherspoon, Amanda Orndorff, Annette and Tom Walsh, Sheri Ergas, Kris Ferrenti, Shelly Sipp and Connor’s former teammate from Saint Andrew’s School and neighbor, Ryan Sipp.  The event was a huge success.  They not only raised money for the Logan’s but raised awareness by having Wendy Waldman from the Traumatic Brain Injury Resource and Support Center talk at the event and provide literature. The community came together in a big way and children, teens and parents came to show their support for the Logan family and send their well wishes to Connor. A website, Caringforconnor.com was set up in to help with medical care for Connor. The reality is that nearly any family regardless of income or insurance will be battling bills when a crisis happens. Almost everyone can use an extra helping hand in these situations.
