District 10 – Timber Creek Defeats Boone 13-4

So, here we go again, is what many Timber Creek fans were I’m sure repeating to themselves when Timber Creek went into half leading 7-3 on Friday night. Timber Creek and Boone have a long and heated rivalry and there was no need to think Friday night would be any different, as Timber Creek hosted Boone for the District 10 Championship. Two of the last three games between these two teams have gone to OT, with Boone emerging as the victor. Friday night Timber Creek was able to avoid the penalty situations that they succumbed to in the regular season meeting, as well as employ a nice game strategy from the face off and see lights out play from their goalie Hunter Loper (22 saves), to come away with a 13-4 district championship win. The first quarter was a back and forth afair with Timber Creek getting on the board first and Boone following suit shortly thereafter. All of scoring would come in the first 6 minutes of the quarter and end with Boone ahead 3-2. Timber Creek put four on the board in the second. Jake Sousa (4 G) scoring on a nice unassisted dodge from the top of the box that seemed to take the wind out of the Boone sails even if momentarily. As well, AJ Jones (1 G) had a nice heads up goal in front of the cage when Boone goalie Tyler Davidson couldn’t control the initial shot from Preston Hopkins (2G, 2A). Hunter Loper was busy making 22 saves on the night, many in the 2nd quarter. Coach Trey Gordon used a long pole middie Braden Cassata (1 A) at face to avoid the fast break goals Timber Creek gave up in the regular season tussle with Boone. The strategy worked to perfection, as Boone didn’t score a single fast break goal on the evening and the athletic Cassata was able to neutralize Boone’s face off man Griffin Broecker to the point that face off was not a factor in the game. After the first six minutes Timber Creeks defense led by Brandon Brinkmeier (1A), Braden Cassata (1A), Tyler Gunning (1A), Evan Walker and Adam Jackson, kept Boone in check with a very efficient zone that Boone couldn’t seem to figure out. Boone remained scoreless from 6 minutes in, until the last three minutes of the game when Tanner woods was able to get one of his two goals past Michael Acevedo (3 saves). The attack of Timber Creek consisting of Nate Gillan (4G, 2A), Preston Hopkins (2G, 2A) and EJ Wheeler (1G,3A) kept Davidson busy with shots on cage most of the night. Coach Gordon was able to utilize his middie’s, led by senior’s Sean Johnson (1G) and Jake Sousa (4G) to pressure Boone’s ball handlers into multiple turnovers which resulted in the 10-3 lead that the end of the third quarter showed. The final period found Timber Creek putting 3 more on the board and Boone finally finding the back of the net compliments of a nice Tanner Woods goal, after almost 39 minutes without a goal. Great goal keeping by both Loper and Davidson keep the score lower than it could have been to close out the contest, but as the clock ticked to :00 the score read Timber Creek 13 and Boone 4. Timber Creek secured their first District Championship in 4 years and the first for Coach Trey Gordon. The celebration in the stands and on the field was a culmination of all the frustration that had accumulated in this rivalry. Boone ends their season 10-7 and Timber Creek moves to 10-7 on the season. Timber Creek moves on to the first round of regionals and will play Hagerty on Friday, April 15th at Hagerty at 7:00 PM.
