From JUdolhins.com Free position shots lead to big early lead Jacksonville, Fla. – Jacksonville University took advantage of several early free position shots and scored the first eight goals on its way to a 17-9 win over Monmouth at D.B. Milne Field Tuesday. The Dolphins (5-1) won their 11th consecutive home game as 13 different players scored. Of the first eight goals, six came off free position attempts as sophomore Kaitlin Stewart put the first score up in less than four minutes into the game. It was the 11th consecutive game, stretching back to last season, in which Stewart has had a goal. JU then averaged a goal a minute in building a 5-0 lead as Nicole Albino (twice), Holly Ventimiglia and Ali Hoffman all found the net in rapid succession. Sophomore Nikki Erdely, who had four goals in last week’s game against Temple, thing hit with 18:59 to go in the first half followed by freshman Jess Worcester and hard shooting Amanda Hurley. Monmouth’s Ales Marino retaliated with a goal, but JU then rattled off a 4-1 roll including two by Morgan Derner who was playing her second game after a knee injury. She was the nation’s leading freshman scorer last season and ended with a hat trick against the Hawks (1-5). Kayleigh Hynes, Morgan Basler, Jess Hotchkiss, Melissa Jaworski (who made good on the only two shots she took during the game) and Ellyn Spangenberg all added goals. Defensively, junior Rachel Hannon had two ground balls and a caused turnover and collected seven draw controls and Hoffman had three ground balls and four caused turnovers. Hannon said her prowess on draw controls comes as the result of a lot of practice. “Practice and working hard when the ball is in the air to get control,” she said. Goal keeper Karli Tobin recorded seven saves in the victory. The Dolphins meet Louisville Saturday on campus at noon. The game is scheduled to be shown on asun.tv.
