FIT Women: Florida Tech Can Clinch SSC Tournament Berth with Win Saturday

via press release   MELBOURNE, Fla. (Women’s Lacrosse) – After garnering the No. 4 seed in last season’s Sunshine State Conference Tournament, Florida Tech (9-6, 1-2 SSC) has the opportunity to clinch the No. 3 spot in next week’s Championships with a victory over Saint Leo (3-11, 0-3 SSC) Saturday at 4 p.m. ET at the University Turf Stadium. The Panthers are fresh off a beating from 8th-ranked Florida Southern last Saturday. The Mocs jumped out to a 7-1 lead at halftime and increased the advantage to 16-4 before the final whistle. The 12-point loss was the largest all season for FIT. Freshman Sam Schiano paced the Panthers with two goals to go along with five draw controls and three caused turnovers. Allie Modica recorded a goal and three ground balls, while Sara Grenier and Caroline Dunleavy added a goal and an assist, respectively. Stephanie Stuart (9-6) made eight saves in the loss. After giving the Panthers their sixth loss of the year, the Mocs then manhandled Saint Leo three days later by a score of 15-2 in Lakeland, Florida. FSC held the Lions scoreless for the first 48 minutes of the game before Kelsey Burns and Neely Regan finally scored for their team. Abbie Ross guides the Lions’ offense with 27 points on a team-high 24 goals and three assists and Burns is just behind with 26 points on 23 goals. Caroline Fraser leads SLU with 13 assists to go along with eight goals. Burns leads the team with 15 caused turnovers and is second on the team with 26 ground balls and 28 draw controls. Rebecca Halley has started all 14 games in goal for the Lions.
