FIT Women: Florida Tech Upended by No. 8 Florida Southern

(Women’s Lacrosse) – After going toe-to-toe with the No. 4 team in the nation on Wednesday, Florida Tech (9-6, 1-2 SSC) struggled against 8th-ranked Florida Southern (12-3, 2-0 SSC) Saturday afternoon, falling to the Moccasins 16-4 at Florida Tech Panther Stadium. Sam Schiano led FIT with two goals, five draw controls and three caused turnovers. Sara Grenier and Allie Modica tallied one goal apiece and Caroline Dunleavy recorded the only assist for the Panthers. Arielle Gunderson paced the defense with three caused turnovers. Stephanie Stuart (9-6) made eight saves while facing 26 total shots, including 24 on goal. Meghan O’Brien opened the scoring for FSC with her unassisted goal at the 21:33 mark. Schiano tied the game with her own individual effort to make it 1-1. The Mocs scored the next six goals of the half to take a 7-1 advantage into the break. FSC scored twice to kick off the second half before the Panthers finally got back on the board with Schiano’s second goal of the game. Grenier made it 10-3 with 15:08 remaining, but from there the Mocs tallied five consecutive goals to increase their lead to 15-3. Free position goals by Modica and FSC’s Emily Santoli would keep the margin at a dozen as time expired. Florida Tech took only 17 shots on the day, including a season-low eight on goal. FSC controlled the ground balls, picking up 24 while limiting the Panthers to a season-low 11. Both teams finished with 10 draw controls. O’Brien paced the Mocs with eight points on four goals and four assists. Santoli recorded three goals and one assist while Shannon Gilfedder added one goal and three assists. Kendall Kerge notched a hat trick and Ashley Robertson scored two goals. Taylor Gillis (7-2) only had to make four saves in the victory.
