FLN Weekly High School Media Poll (Well, This Writer Anyhow!)

Written by Lee Roggenburg on . Posted in .
Well, here we are, the final regular season Media Poll (we will do one after the state championships are concluded) and believe it or not there is movement as some big games were played!  The biggest beneficiaries are Benjamin and St. Thomas Aquinas, as each continued recent winning streaks. I can no longer look at Benjamin as a team that is turning it around, that is now complete after their convincing 13-6 road win over Boca Raton Tuesday.  This team is firing on all cylinders and the District 20 final will be epic. St. Thomas is also on fire and has four straight quality wins, none of which came down to the wire.   Here is this week’s Top 10 Media Poll!   #1  Lake Highland Prep #2  Barron Collier #3  Ponte Vedra #4  Benjamin #5  Saint Andrew’s #6  St. Thomas Aquinas #7  Gulf Coast #8  Boca Raton #9  Jupiter #10  Lake Mary   Also considered:  Maclay, Pope John Paul II, Oak Hall-Gainesville, Columbus Catholic, Seminole and Palm Beach Gardens   Frankly, I could have placed any of the ‘other’s considered’ in that 10th spot without blinking an eye. The always entertaining District 19 gave us Vero’s upset victory over Pope John Paul II and Jensen Beach’s one-goal road loss to Boca Raton, while St. Edwards finished strong. Lake Highland is on cruise control right now and has fine-tuned it’s game through the season.  Who possibly contests them in their quadrant? Barron Collier and Gulf Coast are on a collision path in the first round with the winner looking at STA in the Final 8. Ponte Vedra has basically already beaten all their quadrant’s competitors except for Lake Mary and that looms as a second round match-up if Lake Mary gets by Seminole in Districts. Saint Andrew’s has worked their way back up after finishing the season well but there are road mines still ahead in District. Boca Raton and Jupiter both find themselves falling a little due to late season losses but both are certainly capable of winning it all too. Lake Mary ended the season with two solid wins over teams with winning records and very quietly stayed consistent all year.  Only one of their 4 losses was by more than 2 goals. Of the other schools considered Pope John Paul II needs to beat TWO Top 10 schools to just win District, as would Palm Beach Gardens, a team that has improved throughout the year and faces off with Jupiter in their first playoff game.  If any major upset might occur in the first game this is one to look at.  Another possible upset game would be down south where Columbus Catholic, a team whose offense has stumbled recently, meets a Belen Jesuit team that showed great last-half results.  Watch for that one too!   Good luck to all . . . And Get out to a game!  Even if you don’t have a rooting interest. Because if you don’t . . . you’ll be waiting until February 15th, 2015 to do so!
