Derrick Rose, who has a total of four years of collegiate playing experience at NCAA Division I Canisius College (NY), as well as four years of coaching experience in lacrosse, has been named as a new assistant men’s lacrosse coach for Florida Southern College. Rose will join Rob Williams as an assistant coach underneath head coach Marty Ward.

Rose played four years (2003-07) at Canisius College as a midfielder and attack positions. He was a four time All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Academic Team member. Following his four year collegiate career at Canisus, Rose played four seasons in the Senior B-Box Lacrosse League as a part of the St. Catharines Saints and Niagara Hawks. In 2009, Rose was a part of Niagara’s Can-Am Championship team.

“Coach Rose has a great lacrosse background and is a passionate coach. He brings an exciting energy to the field every day and is a tireless recruiter,” Ward said. “We are fortunate to have him on the staff at Florida Southern.”

After his playing career at Canisius, Rose went on to be the first varsity lacrosse coach at North Tonawanda High School in 2008. Following his stint as coach at the high school level, Rose helped start a lacrosse program at Niagara County Community College in Sanborn, NY. In the program’s first year, Rose led the team to three victories.

In addition to coaching at the high school and the collegiate level, Rose has also had extensive experience working with youth lacrosse. He was the founder and President of the North Tonawanda Athletic Association Lacrosse, a youth lacrosse league that helps build area lacrosse programs. The NTAAL fielded boys and girls teams from, 8 and under to 14 and under.

He received his master’s degree in 2010 from Canisius in health and physical education.

Rose is joining a Moccasin program that enjoyed the best season in its brief four-year history in 2012. In their second season under Ward, the Moccasins were 10-6, posting the most wins in a single season for FSC and were runners-up in the Deep South Conference Tournament for the second straight year.  The Moccasins finished the season ranked in the top 20 in Division II in scoring offense (19th) and scoring defense (15th).
