Florida Southern Seeded #1 in South Region in NCAA D2 Women’s Tourney, Rollins Earns At-Large!

via press release   LAKELAND – Florida Southern not only earned its second straight trip to the NCAA Division II Women’s Lacrosse Tournament on Sunday evening, the third-ranked Moccasins also earned the right to host one of this coming weekend’s two South Regional Tournaments on its home field at Bryant Stadium. The Mocs, who earned the No. 1 seed in the South Region and received a bye in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, will host the first two games of the NCAA Tournament’s South Regional on May 13-14 at Bryant Stadium. The Mocs, who went 4-0 in regular season SSC play for the second straight year, comes into the NCAA Tournament having won a school record 11 consecutive games and 16 of its last 17 games since suffering back-to-back losses at home to open the 2016 campaign against Grand Valley State (10-7) and two-time reigning Division II National Champion Adelphi (16-10). On Friday, May 13, No. 4 seeded and sixth-ranked West Chester (17-2) will face No. 5 seeded and Sunshine State Conference runner-up Rollins (14-3) at 5 p.m. in a first round game. The winner of that game will face the Mocs on Saturday, May 14 at 5 p.m. for the right to advance to the Division II National Semifinals on May 19 in Denver, Colo. The Division II National Championship game is scheduled for Saturday, May 21 in Denver. While the Mocs earned the No. 1 seed in the South Region, Lindenwood (16-2) earned the No. 2 seed and will host the other half of the South Regional bracket on May 13-14. On May 13, No. 3 seeded and eighth-ranked Mercyhurst (17-2) faces No. 6 seeded and 14th-ranked Queens (N.C.) (17-2). The winner of that game will meet No. 2 seeded and fourth-ranked Lindenwood in the second round on May 14 with that winner advancing to meet the winner from the Lakeland regional in the Division II national semifinals. Last season, the Mocs earned its first ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament as they were awarded the No. 3 seed from the South Region and played its first round game in St. Charles, Mo., against No. 2 seeded Lindenwood. Lindenwood would collect a 14-13 double overtime over the Mocs. West Chester, who finished as runner-up in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Tournament on Sunday following a loss to eighth-ranked Mercyhurst, is making its 11th all-time appearance in the NCAA Tournament, but first since 2012. The Golden Rams are one of three teams (Adelphi and LIU Post are the others) in this year’s NCAA Tournament that has won a national championship in women’s lacrosse as they brought home their national titles in 2002 and 2008. WCU has won the second most NCAA Tournament games in Division II history as are 14-8 all-time in the tournament. Rollins, who went 0-2 against the Mocs this season, is making its second consecutive and fourth overall NCAA Tournament appearance. Last season, the Tars were the No. 4 seed from the South Region and suffered 12-3 loss in the first round at No. 1 seeded Lock Haven. The Tars are 1-3 all-time in the NCAA Tournament. Meanwhile, in the North Region, the top two seeds and region hosts are No. 1 ranked Adelphi (19-0) and No. 2 ranked LeMoyne (17-2), who fell 13-6 on Sunday to the Adephi in the championship game of the Northeast 10 Conference. Adelphi, who has won the last two Division II National Championships and has posted a 62-1 record over the past three seasons, earns the No. 1 seed and will face either No. 4 seeded Dowling (16-3) or No. 5 seeded Grand Valley State (15-4) in the second round on May 14, while LeMoyne earned the No. 2 seed and will face either No. 3 seeded LIU Post (16-3) or No. 6 seeded New Haven (13-6) in the second round on May 14. Those two winners from the North Region will meet in the other national semifinal on May 19 in Denver, Colo.
