FLORIDA SOUTHERN’S DJ LUBS MAKES HISTORY AS HE IS MOCS FIRST ALL-AMERICAN IN MEN’S LACROSSE

LAKELAND – Florida Southern junior defender DJ Lubs made history on Monday as he became the first-ever Florida Southern Men’s Lacrosse player to earns All-American honors as he was named a 2013 Honorable Mention Division II honoree by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA).
Lubs, who was named a repeat First-Team All-Deep South Conference selection this year, earns his Honorable Mention All-American honor for his outstanding play on defense for the Moccasins this past season. On the season, Lubs, who is a native of Rockford, Mich., led the Mocs with 22 caused turnovers and was second in ground balls with 42. He averaged 1.47 caused turnovers per game, which was 31st in Division II and third in the DSC and averaged 2.80 ground balls per game on the year. He was one of two players to start all 15 games this season and helped lead a Mocs defense that finished third in the league in goals allowed as they allowed just 9.27 per game. In addition, he recorded one goal on the season and recorded a ground ball in all 15 games, including a career-high seven ground ball pick-ups against Wingate and recorded at least one caused turnover in 14 of 15 games.
“This is a giant step for our young program. It is a great honor to be named an All-American and D.J. Lubs has earned the right to be the first in program history,” Moccasins head coach Marty Ward said. “D.J. is a great leader for this program, he is vocal in the weight room, conditioning, in the locker room and leads by example on the field. This is an exciting time for Florida Southern Lacrosse.”
Lubs is one of two players from the DSC named to one of the three USILA All-American Teams as Tampa midfielder Gregory Griffo, who was named the co-DSC Player of the Year, earned Honorable Mention All-American honors as well.
The Mocs finished its fifth season in 2013 with a 7-8 overall record and posted a 3-5 mark in its final season in the DSC. The Mocs lost in the quarterfinals of the DSC Tournament at Saint Leo, but ended the season with a 21-7 home non-conference win over Young Harris at Bryant Stadium on April 19. Next year, the Mocs will begin play in the Sunshine State Conference as the SSC will offer men’s lacrosse as a sport.
