MELBOURNE, Fla. (Men’s Lacrosse) – Head coach Ryan McAleavey made an addition to his coaching staff this offseason with the hiring of former Florida Southern defensive coordinator Tim King, McAleavey announced Wednesday. King, in just two seasons with the Mocs, helped their program reach back-to-back Deep South Conference Championship games. “I am really excited to join the staff here at Florida Tech,” King said. “I believe that the growth of lacrosse in Florida is an amazing thing to be a part of right now, and to be involved with a school that has such a high academic standard, for me, is the perfect place to be.” King is coming off of a two-year stint as the defensive coordinator at Florida Southern. The program, which enters its fifth season in 2012, combined for a total of eight wins in its first two seasons before King was brought on staff. In King’s first season, the Mocs went 8-7 and reached the DSC Championship game. Last season, Florida Southern improved to 10-6 and made it to the DSC finals for the second-straight season. The Mocs also defeated Florida Tech, 15-5, last April in the first ever meeting between the two programs. “One of the main reasons I came on board at Florida Tech was because of Coach McAleavey’s personality,” King said. “I think we get along great, and that means a lot to me. There were a lot of other programs to coach at across the country, but this was the first place I looked at because of McAleavey and the success of lacrosse in Florida.” McAleavey is happy to bring King over to the Panther family. “I am more than excited to have Tim on staff,” McAleavey said with a smile. “He is going to do a great job. The players already love him, and he has only been working with them for two days. It is going to be a great season with Tim on staff.” Prior to Florida Southern, King was the defensive coordinator at his alma mater Community College of Baltimore County Essex from 2008-10. King’s duties at CCBC Essex went beyond the defense and into the realm of recruiting. His track record brought in a lot of successful athletes from Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois and Colorado. King developed 10 All-Region XX players and six All-Americans in three seasons at CCBC Esssex. On the field, King led CCBC Essex to two National Junior College Athletic Associate Region XX Championships in 2009 and 2010. The Knights finished the 2009 season at the NJCAA Semifinals, and in 2010 they made it all the way to the NJCAA National Championship, finishing runners-up. “His track record speaks for itself,” McAleavey said. “While he was at Florida Southern the last two years, his defense was ranked top 15 in the country. We know Tim has a lot of experience and success to bring to Florida Tech.” King also served as a head coach and as a assistant coach for the Chesapeake Rock Lacrosse Club’s U16, U17 and U18 Premier Teams from 2007-10. Prior to Chesapeake, King was the offensive coordinator at Friends School-Baltimore from 2007-08. In his playing days, King was an all-county honorable mention midfielder at Hammond High School in 1987. In college at CCBC Essex, he led his team to back-to-back NJCAA Region XX Championships and NJCAA Tournament appearances in 1988 and 1989. He was a two-time NJCAA All-Region XX midfielder and served as the team captain. King then transferred to the University of Maryland Baltimore County where he played two seasons of NCAA Division I lacrosse. He went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree from UMBC in 1993. King also earned an Associate’s Degree from CCBC Essex in 1990.
