LAKELAND, Fla. – Florida Southern College men’s lacrosse head coach Marty Ward has announced the addition of Tyler Granelli and Shane Tompkins as assistant coaches. Both coaches bring tremendous experience to the program after completing highly successful collegiate playing careers and serving in various coaching capacities at the club and collegiate levels. “I’m thrilled to have Tyler and Shane on our staff,” said Ward. “They both bring great experience and energy to our program. Both guys are proven winners as players and coaches, and I know they’ll help us take the next step as we compete for championships.” Granelli spent the past two seasons as a graduate assistant coach at his alma mater, Salisbury University, where he assisted in all aspects of running the program, including recruiting, scheduling and film breakdown. During Granelli’s two seasons as a graduate assistant at Salisbury, the Seagulls went 40-6 and won the 2016 NCAA Division III National Championship. “I am truly honored and excited to join an already incredibly successful athletic department and college,” said Granelli. “I am looking forward to working under Coach Ward to help the men’s lacrosse program take another step toward success.” In three years as a player at Salisbury, Granelli helped the Seagulls to an overall record of 61-6, winning a pair of national championships in 2011 and 2012. He started 63 games in his career, and earned all-America honors as a sophomore, junior and senior, while being named as the 2012 “Face-Off Specialist of the Year” by United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) after winning 242-of-365 (.663) faceoff attempts. He ended his career with 424 ground balls and was a three-time all-Capital Athletic Conference selection. In addition to his time as a coach and player at Salisbury, Granelli spent a year as an assistant coach at Randolph-Macon College. He also has experience as a club coach in Maryland, New York and Virginia. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Salisbury in 2013, and completed his masters of education at Salisbury in 2016. Tompkins is a familiar face to Florida Southern fans, having played for the Mocs from 2011-14. In his four seasons at Florida Southern, Tompkins played in 53 games and scored 51 goals while dishing out 41 assists. He led the squad in assists in 2013 (19) and ranks among the top 10 in school history in six different career statistical categories. “I’m extremely humbled and honored to be on staff at my alma mater,” said Tompkins. “I look forward to carrying on the tradition of Florida Southern Lacrosse.” As a junior, Tompkins was an honorable mention all-Deep South Conference selection and, as a senior, helped the Mocs to a school-record 11 victories and a national ranking as high as No. 9. After graduating from Florida Southern with a degree in business administration, Tompkins served as a volunteer assistant with the Mocs in 2014, and was elevated to a full-time role in 2015. In addition to his experience as a player and coach at Florida Southern, Tompkins has also served as the head coach of Tampa Elite Lacrosse and an assistant coach with Silverbacks Lacrosse Association. He was a player/coach with Adelaide Australia Eagles Lacrosse in 2015. Tompkins earned his bachelor’s degree from Florida Southern in 2014. Florida Southern is coming off a 9-9 record from a year ago, and returns a total of eight all-Sunshine State Conference selections.
