Gainesville, Fla. – Florida freshman Nora Barry (Marcellus, N.Y.) was named American Lacrosse Conference Rookie of the Week this morning after two strong appearances on the field this past week. Barry is the fourth Gator to earn this honor and it marks the sixth time a Florida player has been named Rookie of the Week. Barry is the first to earn a weekly honor this season. Ohio State senior Alayna Markwordt and Northwestern junior Taylor Thornton earned the other two weekly honors, as Markwordt was named ALC Offensive Player of the Week and Thornton earned ALC Defensive Player of the Week. Barry had a breakout game against Jacksonville scoring a team-high five goals and tying the school single-game draw control record with six. Additionally, she earned three ground balls in the game. Barry’s strong play led the Gators to a 14-5 victory in their home opener against the neighboring Dolphins, and her dominance on the draw lifted Florida to a 13-8 advantage in the circle. The Marcellus, N.Y., native followed Wednesday’s appearance with another strong game in the midfield on Sunday at UMBC, where she helped lead the Gators past the Retrievers, 18-6, with two ground balls, two draw controls and a caused turnover. All in all, Barry notched five goals, five ground balls, eight draw controls and a caused turnover in two big Gator wins. Markwordt became the Buckeyes’ all-time leading scorer on Saturday, earning 247 points on 151 goals and 96 assists in just over three seasons at Ohio State. She scored a total of 12 points on the week, recording three goals and four assists on Thursday against Robert Morris and adding four goals and an assist on Saturday against Louisville. Thornton held down Northwestern’s defense at No. 5 Duke on Saturday, helping to lead the top-ranked Wildcats past the Blue Devils, 13-5. Thornton’s defense held Duke to just 10 shots on goal in the game, as she recorded four ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers. The Gators return to action on Friday, Feb. 24, when they host the Siena College Saints in non-conference play at Donald R. Dizney Stadium. Opening draw is set for 6:30 p.m.
