Williamsburg, Va. – The No. 6 Florida lacrosse team captured its fourth straight victory this afternoon, defeating William & Mary, 21-8. With the win, the Gators improve to 8-2, while the Tribe sinks to 2-6. Brittany Dashiell (Bel Air, Md.) led the team with a career-high-tying five goals, and Kitty Cullen (Rockville, Md.) and Gabi Wiegand (Bay Shore, N.Y) both put up four goals and two assists. Shannon Gilroy (Huntington, N.Y.) scored a personal-best four goals, and Ashley Bruns (Ellicott City, Md.), Colby Rhea (Abingdon, Md.), Taylor McCord (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Nicole Graziano (Mendham, N.J.) chipped in the remaining four, Bruns, Graziano and Caroline Chesterman (South Nyack, N.Y.) each notched two assists, and Erin Graziano (Mendham, N.J.) put up one as well. Gilroy set a new school record with seven draw controls, and Kayla Stolins (Glen Arm, Md.) added a career-high five more. Nora Barry (Marcellus, N.Y.) earned a team-leading three ground balls, and seven different Gators caused a turnover. Cara Canington (Bel Air, Md.) made a save and allowed four goals in the first half, and Mikey Meagher (Liverpool, N.Y.) stopped three shots and allowed the final four goals, adding a ground ball and a caused turnover. Florida started hot, opening the game on a 5-0 run in just over five minutes, with Dashiell and Gilroy both scoring two and Bruns and Cullen assisting on two each. William & Mary’s Kaleigh Noon put the Tribe on the board with a crossing jump shot at 24:15, but the Gators pushed right back with a pair of goals to go ahead, 7-2. Kyrstin Mackrides notched one for the Tribe at 19:36, but Florida followed with six unanswered goals over the next six minutes to start the running clock, leading 13-2. The Tribe tacked on two more goals before the half, heading into the intermission trailing 13-4. Florida dominated the beginning of the second half, scoring seven out of the gate and taking a daunting 20-4 lead. The Tribe did not go quietly, scoring four in the final five minutes before the horn blew, but fell by a final score of 21-8. The Gators scored 20-or-more points for the fourth time this season, and held their opponents to single digits for the program-record-tying fourth game in a row. Florida returns home on Tuesday night to host No. 17 Darthmouth University in non-conference play at Donald R. Dizney Stadium. Opening draw is set for 6:30 p.m.
