via press release   JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Mercer scored four consecutive goals in the second period and did the same in the third and fourth quarters as the Bears beat Jacksonville University, 12-5, in Southern Conference men’s lacrosse at D.B. Milne Field here Saturday. The loss left JU at 3-9 (1-5 in the SoCon) and Mercer is 5-7 (3-3). After falling behind 2-0, JU freshman Erick Applegate and teammate Dakota Rohlin scored consecutive goals to tie early in the second before Mercer went on its first run to lead 6-2 with 1:44 to play in the half. JU’s Shawn Ewert scored with 41 seconds to go and the Dolphins trailed 6-3 at the break. Applegate scored again for the Dolphins with 7:03 to go in the third and Mercer rolled off four more to seal the game. Dolphin attacker Doran Graham ended the scoring with 5:47 to play on an assist by Ewert. “The difference was their ability to finish shots off,” JU head coach Guy Van Arsdale said. “They flat out shot us and took some quality shots. We had opportunities but couldn’t put it away.” Mercer goal keeper Mike Nugent ended the game with 20 saves on 46 JU shots while JU’s Ben Gleichenhaus, the national leader in save per game, had 14 on 44 Bear shots. “We had some guys go away from the game plan and that cost us some goals,” Van Arsdale said. “It was one of those things where when it’s not going well it starts to snowball.” The Dolphins end their season Saturday with Senior Day against ninth-ranked Air Force at 2 p.m.
