Macon, Ga.- A high-scoring late afternoon led to a slew of milestones for the JU men’s lacrosse team. The Dolphins set a team record for overall goals and goals in a quarter in a 24-4 win over Mercer in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon at Bear Field. The Dolphins posted the first road victory in its two-year history in improving its overall record to 1-1. JU was officially 0-4 in road games last year and 1-1 in neutral-site contests. Mercer, which started its lacrosse program this season, fell to 0-4. Jeremy Tissenbaum and Kyle Rebman each recorded hat tricks as 15 different Dolphins scored. Donovan Lange, TJ Kenary, Cameron Mann, Conor Igoe and Bobby Stockton each netted two-goal names to help the Dolphins surpass the team’s previous single-game record of 17 goals, which was reached three times in 2010. Rebman’s hat trick came in his NCAA debut. “It was a full 60-minute effort by our guys, which is what we asked of them before the game,” JU head coach Matt Kerwick said. “It’s great to see 15 players get on the scorecard since everyone works so hard in practice to prepare for each opponent.” JU registered 10 goals in both the first and third quarters. The program’s previous high for goals in a quarter was eight against Presbyterian on April 17, 2010. Mercer allowed twice as many shots as it fired (48-24) as the Dolphins also built a 50-26 ground-ball advantage. Igoe helped the Dolphins surge to a 6-0 lead just 9:24 in. The freshman opened the scoring with an unassisted goal and fired another hard shot for JU’s fifth goal. The outburst marked Igoe’s first two collegiate goals. Stockton continued his hot start. The senior middie followed a four-goal outing in the season opener against Georgetown with another two goals, bringing his total to six just two games into a new campaign.  Fellow middie Cameron Mann now has seven points (four goals, three assists) through two games. Defensively, the Dolphins tied another team record, holding Mercer to the fewest goals against since a 9-4 win over Providence on March 5, 2010. Freshman Peter DeLuca made nine saves and allowed just two goals in 38:43 to even his ledger at 1-1. DeLuca received a plethora of support thanks to Tissenbaum’s second career hat trick. Rebman was also efficient in the attack zone. The freshman, who did not even see the field in the opener, tallied three goals and an assist off the bench for a four-point effort in his first game action. The Dolphins took a 12-1 lead in halftime and sustained the pressure for the third quarter’s duration. Max Gurowski picked up a goal and assist in the third to craft a three-point afternoon. JU will scrimmage RIT on Sunday before restarting regular season play against Denver in Colorado on March 5.
