via press release   JACKSONVILLE, Fla – The Jacksonville University women’s lacrosse team clinched at least a share of its fourth consecutive Atlantic Sun Conference title by beating Furman 16-9 at D. B. Milne Field here Saturday. With the win, the Dolphins (12-4, 7-0) won their part of the title and can capture the championship outright with a win over Stetson on May 1 in the regular season finale. Should the Dolphins tie with Old Dominion, which has one loss, each would earn a conference championship trophy. Old Dominion has two league games to play. “We’re proud of our team for playing securing a share of the A-Sun title this year,” JU associate head coach Paul McCord said. “The regular season title and top seed at the tournament are always goals for the program.” The Dolphins pulled out to a 3-0 lead but the pesky Paladins battled back and JU was able to hold a 7-5 halftime lead. “We look forward to continuing growth as a team and after watching the first half this team has a lot of growth still available,” McCord said. “But, Furman has some terrific players and we knew they would be up to compete against us.” Furman’s Gaby Susz scored with 25:55 to play and cut the JU lead to 7-6 then the Dolphins’ Erin McGuire and Ashtyn Hiron took control and the duo scored three goals, two by the sophomore Hiron, in two minutes 34 seconds for a 10-6 lead. Hiron’s second score, with 22:30 to play, turned out to be the game winner. Hiron, last week’s A-Sun Player of the Week, led JU with four goals while redshirt senior Taylor McCord had three and three assists. Junior Danielle Della Rocca and freshman Lillie Miller each had hat tricks while Kelsey Wiglesworth and Jody Julmice each had one goal. “Our shooting was very good all game,” McCord said. “Anytime you take 31 shots and yield only four saves you are doing a lot right.” Junior defender Kristin Ridenour had three ground balls while Amelia Pedwell, Erika Brager, Hiron, Della Rocca and McCord all had two. Junior midfielder Ashley Trice led Furman with four goals while Paige Gamble had three and three assists. “Congrats to our senior class which now has been a part of four regular season titles in four years,” McCord said. “That type perfection is rare in college athletics.”
