FloridaLacrosseNews.com was able to catch up with Katrina Dowd (Asst. Coach Syracuse, Team USA, Northwestern ’10) at the US Lacrosse National Convention last weekend after her Demo Field clinic on “Attack Skills.”  One of the most approachable players in lacrosse, Katrina entertained packed stands and an additional standing crowd for an hour, and then spent time talking and signing autographs with everyone who was willing to wait.  We then spent a few minutes asking her about the transition from player to coach, how she finds the time to train and how she trains for Team USA, as well as asking her about her upcoming Team USA match against Coach Kelly Amonte-Hiller and her old teammates from Northwestern.  This will be the first time Katrina Dowd has played against her old team – the contest is part of the 2012 Champion’s Challenge in Orlando, Florida on January 27-29, 2012. IFL: So you’re now settled into the Syracuse scene, what’s a typical day like as an assistant coach of the Orange women’s lacrosse? KDowd: On a typical day we spend a lot of time in the office.  I’m obviously about a year and a half out from being a player, so I love that I now get paid to think about lacrosse. We have an open door policy with our players: Come on in, come talk to us, whether you have a problem, whether you just want to come say hello, or you just want to talk lax and get better by having a conversation about it.  We’re pretty lucky that we have a suite with three big offices, so me, Gary [Gait] and Regy [Thorpe], spend a lot of time together.  It’s a great space for us to bring our team.  We have a little fiddle stick net up, so we’ll do Gary vs. Katrina, or one of us will get in goal — so we like to have a lot of fun, but we also spend a lot of time thinking about lacrosse, planning stuff for our players, but it’s a great place for our kids to come.
