Mar. 17th – The luck of the Irish eluded Lake Highland (8-1; 2-0 District 11) this evening as the Highlanders dropped a closely contested game to Maryland’s Boys’ Latin Lakers 8-6 at North Broward Prep in Boca Raton, FL.  Lake Highland proved themselves worthy in their first test against a northern hotbed powerhouse in school history.  The Highlanders jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead three minutes into the first quarter and narrowly missed on two more scoring chances, all of which had the Lakers on their heels and realizing their spring break would require some serious focus (Boys’ Latin next plays St. Andrews on Tuesday night).  LHP senior attackman Austin Tamayo scored the first goal and assisted on the second to Junior midfielder Brennen Fugate.  True to their well earned reputation, Boys’ Latin responded with full field pressure, deft ball movement, control of the face-off X and outstanding goalie play to score six unanswered goals over the balance of the first quarter and through the majority of the second.  It was Lake Highland who found themselves on their heels now, committing 6 turnovers in the second period, four of which led directly to Laker goals.  The Highlanders stemmed the tide at the :44 mark of the second quarter when Junior attackman Clay Phillips scored on a two man up opportunity.  LHP trailed 6-3 at the half.  The momentum stayed with the Highlanders after the break and in their own showing of character and commitment, Lake Highland scored the games next three goals to tie the game at 6-6 with 3:36 left in the third quarter.  Tamayo and Fugate each added their second goal of the evening and Senior midfielder Davis Anderson contributed an unassisted tally on a Lake Highland extra man up opportunity.  With the table set for a memorable finish, both teams redoubled their efforts with tight defense and quality offensive possessions.  The Lakers took advantage of a man-up opportunity at the 11:43 mark of the fourth quarter, scoring what turned out to be the game winning goal.  Lake Highland failed to convert on its own man-up chance two minutes later despite several outstanding scoring chances.  Boys’ Latin added another goal at the 2:30 mark and ran out the clock to preserve the victory.  Lake Highland next prepares to face District 11 rival Bishop Moore on Tuesday evening, March 20^th.
