Will Rotatori finds the "five hole"
(Apr. 26th) – The Highlanders (17-1; 5-0) advanced to the second round of the state tournament this evening with a well earned 10 – 6 victory over rival Winter Park at Showalter Field. The Lake Highland offense was led by Junior attackman Austin Tamayo (2G, 3A) along with two goals each from Junior Davis Anderson, Senior captain Nick St. Laurent, Senior captain Will Rotatori and Sophomore Clay Phillips. night and was led by Senior captain goalie Warren Berenis. A combination of nerves and tight defensive pressure led to numerous turnovers by both squads and resulted in a scoreless first period. After Garrett Manno of Winter Park scored the game’s first goal, the Highlanders reeled off four straight scores to take a 4-1 lead at the half. While LHP controlled the overall flow of play, goalie Warren Berenis stopped several point blank shots during the period. The momentum shifted quickly after the break as Winter Park D-pole Travis Schreiber scored at the 11:50 mark of the third period that ignited a four goal run that had Winter Park taking a 5-4 lead with 3 minutes left in the third period. That’s when the Austin Tamayo show started. The lefty took a feed from Will Rotatori and scored on a pretty front side swing to even the score at 5 all at the end of three periods. Lake Highland took back the lead at 6-5 on a slick inside finish by Nick St. Laurent off a dart of a feed from Sophomore middie Devon Lewis. Winter Park refused to give up and tied the score at 6 all just 20 seconds later. LHP then took control of the game for good as Clay Phillips scored back to back goals on perfect feeds from Tamayo. Tamayo and Rotatori then put the finishing touches on the 10-6 final with unassisted goals. Lake Highland effectively controlled the ball over the final four minutes to close out the win. Lake Highland next plays at Vero Beach on Friday. You can read the entire play off round up here.
