Feb. 28th – Lake Highland (3-0; 0-0 District 11) survived its biggest test of the young season, downing the visiting Sharks of Ponte Vedra 11-5 this evening at CNL Stadium.  Both teams played tentative in the first quarter with each squad committing six turnovers.  Juniors Ryan Johnson (2G, 0A) and Brennen Fugate (1G, 1A) contributed highlight reel goals and Junior Clay Phillips scored the first of his team leading three goals at the :14 mark of the period to give the Highlanders a 3–2 lead.

The game settled into a tightly contested battle in the second quarter highlighted by tough defense and great individual efforts including Sophomore Will Wolfson’s gutty goal scoring drive to the crease which gave LHP a 4-3 lead at the 10:37 mark.  Lake Highland’s attack unit of Austin Tamayo (4 assists for the game), Billy Roll (1G, 1A) and Clay Phillips scored or assisted on the next two LHP tallies resulting in a 6-4 Highlander lead at the half. The Highlanders cracked the game open after the intermission led by a stifling defense (Goalie Alex Acuna and defensemen Casey Irish, Jackson Bowen and Riley Shepardson) which held Ponte Vedra All-American Brendan Francis  in check all evening and the Sharks team scoreless in the second half until there were just two minutes left in the contest.

On the offensive end of the field, Senior Davis Anderson and Junior Devon Lewis, who were closely marked all evening, broke free to score the last three goals for LHP and seal the win.  The Highlanders next prepare to host the Raiders of St. Thomas Aquinas at 1:30p Saturday at CNL Stadium.
