From the Orlando Sentinel Kris Coppolino and Austin Tamayo didn’t begin their senior seasons with expectations of a state title. “It was scary to see how bad our team was after losing that class,” said Tamayo, who led Lake Highland to the title game after losing 17 seniors. “I can’t put enough emphasis on how much doubt people put on us after losing so many guys.” For Coppolino, one of the most decorated players in area history, success wasn’t measured in wins and losses. “We went into this saying we were going to do whatever we can to make it fun,” said Coppolino, whose Winter Springs team was upset by Bishop Moore in regionals. “I had the best senior year I possibly could have had.” Tamayo and Coppolino, both attackers, are the All-Central Florida players of the year. Coppolino, who always had a stick in her hand growing up in lacrosse-crazed Long Island, N.Y., totaled 101 goals and 82 assists despite being the focus of every Bears opponent. She routinely was face-guarded, including standoffs with close friends Madison Hendren of Lake Brantley and Brittany Larranaga of Bishop Moore.
