Major League Lacrosse – Week One in Review

via press release from MLL   BOSTON (April 26, 2016)- Major League Lacrosse, the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, kicked off the 2016 season with Week 1 action this past weekend.   Game Recaps   Chesapeake Bayhawks 16 Atlanta Blaze 13   Atlanta Blaze hosted a crowd of 4,000 for their debut and came out hot scoring the first six goals of the game. Matt Danowski came out in the second quarter and scored three straight to bring the Bayhawks back into the game. The Bayhawks kept their offense rolling with a seven-goal third quarter and closed the game out strong.  Danowski finished with four goals and four assists while Alex Love tallied four goals of his own. Kevin Rice led the Blaze with six goals.   New York Lizards 19 Rochester Rattlers 16   Rochester came out strong in this rematch of the 2015 Championship Game, but couldn’t hold off a second-half surge from the defending champs. Rochester had a four-goal lead heading into halftime, but the Lizards outscored the Rattlers 7-1 in the fourth quarter to pull off the comeback victory. Matt Gibson tallied 5 goals while Paul Rabil added four of his own, including a two-pointer. Jordan Wolf scored five goals in the loss.   Ohio Machine 16 Florida Launch 14   Despite Casey Powell setting a team record for the most points in a season-opener with seven (4 goals, 3 assists), the Launch lost at home to the Machine. Mark Cockerton tallied four goals while Marcus Holman and Peter Baum each added three of their own to lead the Machine. Adam Fullerton played the full 60 minutes in goal for the Machine and recorded 8 saves for his first win of the season.   Charlotte Hounds 15 Boston Cannons 12   The Hounds started off slow, but outscored the Cannons 10-6 in the second half to pull away and secure their first-ever season-opener victory. Charlotte played without head coach Jim Stagnitta, who had a prior commitment with Penn, and were led by Joey Sankey’s huge nine-point (6 goals, 3 assists) offensive performance.  Will Manny led the Cannons with two goals and six assists.   Coca-Cola Players of the Game   Coca-Cola, as a multi-year and proud sponsor of MLL, will feature a weekly honor titled the “Coca-Cola Players of the Game”, where one player from each match-up will be deemed the most valuable player of the game. These awards are two separate awards that honor the best offensive and defensive MLL performances from the week.
