Mandarin Advances to District Finals for First Time in Program History

On Monday, April 16th, the Mandarin Mustangs made program history by beating Fleming Island to advance to district finals for the first time.  Fleming Island took an early lead in the District Semi-Final game at the Bolles School, ending the first quarter 6-3.  Mandarin bounced back in the second quarter to tie the score at 7 goals at the half. Both teams played great intensity throughout the second half, ending the third quarter tied again at 9.  Fleming Island hoped to regain the lead in the 4th quarter but the Mandarin Mustangs came up victorious with a 12-10 win. Senior middie captain Adrian Silvia was leading scorer for Mandarin with 3 goals and 2 assist. Sophomore Johnny Dister, attack, junior Blake Weil, middie/FO, and senior Ryan Cockriel, middie, contributed 2 goals each. Other goal scorers, with one goal each, were senior Henry Alonso,attack captain, and junior Bryce Mullins, also at attack. The Mustang defense played a solid game as well. Sophomore Justin Curtis and senior Zach DeBerardine each has 3 takeaways while junior Igor Pertile and senior defense captain Aiden Lavelle had 2 each. Blake Weil won 11 of 17 face-offs and freshman goalie Brent Gordon saved 12 of 16 shots on goal in three quarters. Leading goal scorers for Fleming Island were juniors Zeke Wilson, middie, and Jack Hirabayashi, attack, as well as freshman attack man Hayden LaVangie with two goals each. Goals were also scored junior middies Andrew Wehner and Justin Melville as well senior attack man Matthew McCormack. Defense men Dalton Dee, senior captain, Jason Hanes, senior, and Josh Schmidt, also a senior, played a solid game but were ultimately edged by the Mandarin offense. The Mandarin Mustangs will play the Bolles Bulldogs on April 18th  in District Finals. This championship game will start at 7:00 and is hosted by The Bolles School.
