MLL: 2016 Maverik Most Improved Player of the Year: Mike Chanenchuk

via MLL press release, photo via Zimbio   BOSTON (August 11, 2016) – Major League Lacrosse and  Maverik  Lacrosse have named Charlotte Hounds midfielder Mike Chanenchuk as the 2016 Most Improved Player Award, Presented by Maverik, as voted by MLL Head Coaches and General Managers. Chanenchuk, a 2014 graduate of the University of Maryland, was drafted in the 2014 Collegiate Draft by the Charlotte Hounds at the 11th overall selection. He joined the team in early June and played in the final nine games of the season to finish with 14 points (9G, 5A). During the 2015 season, Chanenchuk missed the first four games with an injury. For the remainder of the season, he finished with 14 goals and 22 points to rank fifth overall on the offense. His personal-best output came against the Florida Launch on July 3 with a four goal performance. The 2016 season was a breakout year as Chanenchuk tallied at least two points in every game for the Hounds and scored in every game except the season opener against the Boston Cannons. In Week 9 of the season, Chanenchuk tallied a career-high six points against the Cannons with three goals, including a two-pointer, and two assists. He followed that up in Week 11 with a new career-high of eight points. Chanenchuk scored six goals and added two assists in the 15-14 overtime victory against the Atlanta Blaze. He scored the last three goals of the game in order to force overtime, secure the Hounds’ victory and win Coca-Cola Player of the Game honors. In Week 14, Chanenchuk posted his second six-goal game during the Hounds’ 15-12 loss to the Denver Outlaws. Playing in all 14 games, Chanenchuk finished the regular season with 53 overall points, only trailing teammate Joey Sankey who tallied 54 points. Chanenchuk led the team in goals with 34 and was second on the team with 17 assists. Coming up behind Chanenchuk in the voting was Atlanta attackman Kevin Rice with 28 points. Rice only played in nine games due to injury but led the team in points with 58 (37g, 21a). Close behind Rice was Chesapeake attackman, Brendan Mundorf, who led the Bayhawks in goals with 42 after missing the entire 2015 season. 2016 Maverik Most Improved Player Voting Results The  Maverik Most Improved Player of the Year is determined based on the total number of points each player receives from a voting panel of MLL Head Coaches and General Managers. Every vote is assigned a point total: First place = 5 points Second place = 3 points Third place = 1 point most improved player
