WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. –– Senior attackman Joe Ciringione (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) scored two goals and assisted on four others as host 15th-ranked Palm Beach Atlantic defeated visiting second-ranked Grand Valley State, 14-10, in a non-conference game this afternoon. The Sailfish (7-0) registered their second-ever win over a top ten program (2012; at No. 8 SCAD) and their first over the No. 2 Lakers. Following an opening face-off win by Kevan Van Stone (Butler, N.J./Butler), senior Bobby Hantske (Annapolis, Md./Southern) dodged unassisted at 14:26 for the game’s first goal. Van Stone would go 20-for-26 in the contest, helping the Sailfish in an effort to control the middle of the field. The tandem of Van Stone and Dave Schultz (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary’s) would combine for a 78.6% win percentage and 24 ground balls. At 13:39, a goal from Charlie Farmer knotted the score at one, before three more goals from GVSU (including two from Zack Grusell) ballooned the lead to 4-1 Lakers. The four goal run was stemmed by a 30-second Grand Valley State penalty, where Ciringione found junior Colin Price (Fairfax Station, Va./Lake Braddock) for PBA’s second goal of the game. Another 30-second Lakers penalty with 0:30 remaining in the first quarter gave the Sailfish another chance to cash in, which they did (Scalzo via Ciringione). On the ensuing face-off, a Van Stone assist became opportunity for Ciringione, who ripped the net with a high-to-high shot at 0:07. The goal was allowed following a convergence of officials, who determined that the ball did cross the goal line before exiting through the back of the goal. In the second, goals were less frequent as a result of great defensive play from both teams. Hantske’s unassisted dodge at 11:44 gave PBA a 5-4 lead before GVSU’s Jeremy Pouba evened the score at 6:12. The score remained tied until the closing seconds of the first half, when goalie Cory Ender (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) launched a full field pass to junior attackman Dominic Scalzo (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas), who scored with 0:03 left in the second quarter. Following a Lakers goal to start the third, the Sailfish went man-up by way of a slashing call, scoring again (Scalzo) to keep their EMO conversions at a perfect 3-for-3 (they finished 4/4 on the day). Just over one minute later, freshman Tranard Cannon (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Jupiter Christian) scored on a shot from the top of the box, expanding the lead to two. Following that, Hantske scored twice in 43 seconds (9:02, 8:19), sandwiching a Grand Valley State goal at 8:33, giving Palm Beach Atlantic a 10-7 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Despite a GVSU goal which cut the lead to 10-8, two answers from Scalzo effectively put the game out of reach. PBA added goals from Ciringione and Dennis Koleda (Huntington, N.Y./Harborfields), while the Lakers received goals from the strong play of Conor Schwalm and Brenden Austin. Ender finished with eleven saves in net for the Sailfish, in addition to seven ground balls and one assist.
