Regional Semi-Finals – It’s down to Eight!

We started with 89 teams in 15 districts back on Feb 21st. Now it’s down to the Elite 8. Here is what happened last night and what we can look forward to on Friday.

Game 1

Leon vs. Episcopal Jacksonville – Tallahassee has a team in the Regional Finals! Leon took this game 6-4 and will now face Ponte Vedra in the next round. This one is scheduled for 7:00 pm on Friday at Ponte Vedra. Congrats to Leon HS!

Game 2

Ponte Vedra vs. Oak Hall – Oak Hall won this brand new district but Ponte Vedra had too much experience in these big games. Ponte Vedra won handily 16-3 and will host a fired-up Leon team on Friday.

Game 3

Saint Andrews vs. Barron Collier – Saint Andrews did what St. Andrews always does; they bring a big fat dose of reality to the situation. Barron Collier had a fantastic season and had played top teams from around the state and even New England and New Jersey. They certainly look to be building a future power house down there on the Gulf of Mexico. But the ride has come to an end with the 23-4 loss to the defending champions. Great season at Barron Collier and we can be sure the Scots are just getting started. Saint Andrews will play at St. Thomas Aquinas, most likely at St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday at 7:00pm. We will update this post when we have confirmation.

Game 4

Saint Thomas Aquinas vs. Gulliver Prep – Sometimes a team just has your number. In a game that was reportedly played much closer than the score indicates St. Thomas Aquinas defeated Gulliver Prep for the second time this season 12-5. Gulliver Prep’s season concludes with a very respectable 12-7 record and St. Thomas Aquinas will gear up for the defending champs.

Game 5

Lake Brantley vs. Lake Mary – We thought this one would be a great game and it was, even though it was officiated like a youth basketball game. We have never seen two teams play so clean and fast and get so many penalties.

Apparently this is a “non-contact” league. Lake Mary was down early and down big. They scored a goal with 31 seconds left in the first half to close the gap to 8-2 and it looked like they had a spark. But Brantley answered right back with a goal 25 seconds later to stretch it back out. Lake Mary, however, did battle back in the second half and found a little more patience on the offensive end. Most of the possessions in which they settled the ball would result in decent shots but great goal tending and some friendly pipes kept them just out of reach. In the end, Lake Brantley had more speed at the mid-field and a little better shooting to hold on for the victory by a score of 11-8. Lake Brantley will head to Apopka for the Region Final. Again, this is probably Friday evening at 7:00 at Apopka High School. We will update the site when we have confirmation.

Game 6

Apopka vs. Cardinal Mooney – Cardinal Mooney came out of the brand-new District 8. While Cardinal Mooney had a great season and is no doubt proud of winning their first FHSAA District Lacrosse championship, Apopka’s experience and depth proved to be too much.  Apopka won 16-2 and will host Lake Brantley for the Region Final.

Game 7

Winter Park vs. Lake Highland Prep – The end of the road for Winter Park turned out to be at Showalter Field as Lake Highland overpowered the home team 10-6. A surprisingly low-scoring affair for two high-scoring offensive teams. Lake Highland will travel to Vero Beach to take on a well-rested Indians team who had a bye in the first round of the Regionals.
