WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 25, 2012)- The Rollins men’s lacrosse team earned its first home and conference victory of the season over Florida Tech, Saturday afternoon, by a score of 17-5. The Tars improve to 1-3 on the season and have started to hit their stride offensively and defensively. Rollins started out strong in the first period, quickly grabbing a 4-0 lead in the first 15 minutes of action. The Tars used a combination of quick attacks, accurate passing and stingy defense to pitch a shutout in the first period. The second period again was a strong suit for the Tars as they stretched the lead to six goals, resulting in an 8-2 halftime lead. Rollins was able to setup and direct the pace of play by virtue of the play calling and domination of possession. James Libutti was the offensive catalyst for the Tars, scoring two goals in the first period. Peter Harvey and Will Diamond also chipped in goals in the first period with great individual efforts. Harvey again was a force in the faceoff department, which saw him go 6-for-9 and tally a goal off a great win and sprint downfield, beating the defenders before they could setup. Coming out of the break the Tars cranked up the heat even more with seven goals, while limiting the Panthers to one marker. Rollins took advantage of having possession most of the afternoon and fired off 48 shots on the afternoon. Defensively the Tars were able to key in on the offense of the Panthers and used a trio of goalies to thwart the Panther attack. Andrew Sheerin, Ethan Enriquez and Ian Flick all saw time between the pipes and combined for 12 saves and only five goals against. Rollins also racked up 50 groundballs, while Florida Tech mustered 22. Rollins would be outscored in the fourth, not registering a goal, while Florida Tech collected four. The late offensive surge was not enough as Rollins had built a big enough lead to take advantage of their deep bench and to get younger players involved in the fray. Diamond lit up the scoresheet with four goals and one assist, while Libutti tallied three goals and had a game-high eight groundballs. Stephen DeFlumeri also registed a multi-goal effort with two and was joined on the scoresheet by Connor Galvin, Chris Ross, Michael Lupinacci, Will Hauver and Jackson Ryland with one goal apiece.
