Season 2 Comes to an End – Doug Shanahan’s St. Brendans Ends at 11-7

FLN has asked Head Coach Doug Shanahan of St. Brendan High School in Miami to continue to share his thoughts on how he is building his program through what is now their second season and Doug has graciously agreed to do so. Here is his latest submission! We thank Doug for taking the time to do this and letting our readers experience this unique insight.   Week number ten of the season found us during our spring break. We were also scrambling for another game, as our Miami Killian game was cancelled with a brief storm that rolled through the Miami area. Luckily, we were able to add another game versus Lely on Thurs 3/31. This called for 2 back to back trips to the Naples area.  Both the game on Thursday, and that on Friday versus Palmetto Ridge, found us trying to play catch up. Unfortunately we were not able to do this in either game. Losing 2 straight games was a bit of a disappointing way for our team and overall program to end our season. However, we need to reflect on the overall picture of finishing with an 11-7 season. For a second year program to find a way to win 11 games is an accomplishment in and of itself. We also left a few games on table that could have swung our way.   St Brendan Palmetto Ridge 2016 #4   Making *consistent* effort was a constant conversation with our players during the season. Often we realized what we needed to do as a team, and the corrections that needed to be made. We just weren’t able to be consistent with making them, especially during critical times of certain games. Our boys are still learning and I am extremely proud of their efforts and the commitment throughout the season. On a side note congratulations to Carlos Clavijo, whose 110 goal, record setting season, is really impressive. Carlos was able to break Harris Stolzenberg’s record of 107 from 2012. I am privileged and blessed to be able to say that I have coached both of the top 2 all-time record holders.  I am proud of their accomplishments and their record setting seasons.   — Doug Shanahan St Brendan High School Assistant Athletic Director Lacrosse Director & Head Coach
