Take last year’s District 8 and add Hagerty and Oviedo and you have a terrific district.  The downside?  Likely facing Ponte Vedra in Round 1.  On paper this is a heck of a district tournament to attend!

Lake Mary will likely be the favorite and of all the teams up in this half of the state, they have had the most success against Ponte Vedra lately.  But Lake Brantley came within a goal of snatching the district for themselves last year, and Hagerty made my final Top 25 too.  Slobberknocker territory to steal a catchphrase.

Oviedo has been steadily improving so can they tale a step up in a tougher district than they came from.  Seminole showed marked improvement last year while Lyman and Winter Springs will seek to improve on tough seasons last year.

Certainly a season to savor for fans in this area.

Oviedo

Head Coach William Kellis

What are your expectations this season for the team?

This year’s team is going to have a great balance of new and returning talent. Our new guys on Varsity are extremely athletic and smart, but they need to grow up quick. We’ve got quite a few returners who have received All-conference awards and probably a few will be nominated / voted All-Americans at the end of this year. As always, our short term/ daily goal is to be the best. Being the best you can be as an individual to contribute to a team much larger than yourself. When everyone buys in – great things happen. Our long term goals remain the same as well – we want to compete for and win a district title. This year our district is TOUGH. In my opinion, and many others, this district might be the most well-rounded district in Florida 2A lacrosse. Top to bottom, we have some GREAT teams. In no particular order I expect to see Lake Brantley, Lake Mary, Hagerty, and us (Oviedo) in the Semi-Finals on Tuesday March 14th, and we plan on playing and winning on Thursday March 16th.

Who are the returning players who will make a difference this season?

FO/M   Cole Gehring – 71% Faceoffs, 2 games 100% FO wins, 2G/15A , 125 GB’s

M          Tanner Sims – 22G/7A

M          Kevin Croteau – 46 Goals, 15 Assists

D/LSM  Julian VanDeventer – 42 GB’s, 22 Takeaways

What players do you expect to step up this year that didn’t get much playing time last year?

Jacob Thelan – Freshman Midfielder

Aidan Wilson – Freshman Defenseman

Aidan Beccacece – Sophomore Midfielder

What are the games you are really looking forward to this season?

Hagerty – in-town rival / district rival

Lake Mary – district rival

Lake Brantley – district rival

West Orange – 2OT thriller last season

Boone – first time meeting each other in program history

Seminole

Head Coach Trevor Jones

What are your expectations this season for the team?

We are looking to continue to build off of the success that we have had in the last few years. The team has been extremely young over the past couple of years, but with our current senior and junior classes our program is not just ready to make the district play off, but compete for the championship this year and next year.

Who are the returning players who will make a difference this season?

Our biggest difference maker is senior goalie Terry Huffman (North Greenville), he is a three year captain and our rock on and off the field. Seniors Jose Fajardo and Karsten Blyseth will anchor the defense. In the midfield, junior Nick Jaffe and senior Ryan Curley lead the way. Junior Luke Williams is our quarterback at attack with seniors Thomas Fry and Kevin Jackson adding their experience to round out our offense.

What players do you expect to step up this year that didn’t get much playing time last year?

Defensemen Mo Brooks, Cam Jaffe, midfielder Curtis Rustin, and attackman Preston Shadrix are fours guys who will be looked upon to step up and add depth to our roster this year.

What are the games you are really looking forward to this season?

We always look forward to our two biggest district games against Lake Mary and Lake Brantley. Now with our new district alignment we can add Hagerty and Oviedo to that list. The other games we are looking forward to are Winter Park, Matanzas, and Windermere.

Hagerty

Head Coach Ken Hofer

What are your expectations this season for the team?

As a coach I will never say we can’t win our district. The district has gotten much tougher and we’ll eat that elephant, ‘one bite at a time.” Hagerty has graduated 6 college bound players and we’re working with younger talented underclassmen this season. Some have already committed to play in college and others working in that direction.  Our approach will be to prepare for each opponent based on game film and what we’ve seen in summer and fall ball. I feel this will be a tight race and we are in it.

Who are the returning players who will make a difference this season?

Senior Christian Hofer (Embry-Riddle) led the team last year with 59 goals and 33 assists. He was named to the First-Team Seminole Athletic Conference in 2018 and 2019. Senior Kienan Desguin (St Leo) was a transfer last year that was a significant part of our defense and will lead the current defense this year. He was named to the All-Metro first team in 2018. Junior Ben Ditmyer was also an offensive threat last year with 26 goals and 18 assists.

What players do you expect to step up this year that didn’t get much playing time last year?

Defensive middy Collin Bruno (Jr) will be a strong part in our defense and offense and play the string in our box. Junior Dom Smith has worked hard in the off season and will start at attack. Both guys played varsity last year and will assume more responsibility this season. Freshman John Mediavilla surprised us in the off season and will be incorporated into our offense this year.

What are the games you are really looking forward to this season?

Naturally cross-town rival Oviedo is a favorite. Lake Brantley and Lake Mary will now have more of an impact than prior seasons due to the new district alignment.

We will add Lyman and Winter Springs when we receive their questionnaires
