Rock Hill, S.C.—-The Wingate University men’s lacrosse team won both AstroTurf South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week awards for the week ending Saturday, April 2. Bulldog junior goalie Jacob Ormerod (Lake Mary, Fla.) is the SAC Defensive Player of the Week, while freshman attack Alex Llerandi (Marietta, Ga.) is the SAC Offensive Player of the Week. Llerandi is a first-time honoree, while Ormerod receives his nod for the third time this season and the fourth time in his career. Ormerod led the Bulldogs to two SAC victories last week over number 15 Queens 9-8 and Catawba 10-9. In the Wednesday win over Queens, Ormerod posted a career-high 22 saves as the Bulldogs overcame a five-goal first quarter deficit to defeat the 15th-ranked Royals 9-8. On Saturday, the Seminole High School product posted 21 saves in Wingate’s come-from-behind overtime triumph over Catawba. For the week, he allowed only 17 goals with an 8.44 goals against average (GAA). Ormerod’s save percentage was 71.7. “Jacob is putting together a fantastic year for us,” Wingate head men’s lacrosse Michael Lawson says. “He keeps getting better and better each week. Without Jacob in the cage, we don’t experience the success we experienced last week.” Llerandi had six goals last week. In the Wednesday win over Queens, the Kell High School graduate had three goals. The Bulldogs overcame a five-goal first quarter deficit to defeat the 15th-ranked Royals 9-8. Llerandi collected three goals as Wingate rallied for a 10-9 overtime triumph over Catawba. “Alex is playing a huge role for us in big games,” Lawson says. “He is becoming more comfortable with his role on our team. Alex had two huge offensive efforts last week…against two very good teams. A men’s lacrosse hat trick is a big deal, but it is even a bigger deal against two teams the caliber of Queens and Catawba.”
