Steinbrenner Advances Out of District 16 With 12-7 Win Over Wharton

April 7th was a night to remember for the Steinbrenner Warriors. Steinbrenner took on Wharton at a neutral site and won the district Championship for the first time in school history. The district 16 final played by Steinbrenner produced goals, great man down defense and a crucial display of focus by their senior goalie, Dan Elkes. Who recorded 14 saves in their 12-7 win against Wharton. The game started with domination at the face-off X by Matthew Bleckley of Wharton and continued until the last quarter. Steinbrenner seemed to not answer the question at the face-off X but was able to settle in and play a hard defensive front lead by Senior Captain Parker Kaleo. Not to be out done by his older brother, younger brother Carson Kaleo (jr) helped the cause with 3 goals and 2 assists to help close out the game. First quarter ended with Steinbrenner 3, Wharton 1.  By the second quarter, Steinbrenner jumped ahead quickly with the entire Steinbrenner offense contributing 4 goals from four different players. The 3rd quarter started with Steinbrenner leading 7-2 and remained to be dominated at the Face-off X by Whartons junior, #2 Mathew Bleckley. Wharton ripped off 3 quick goals with Bleckley’s help and Senior #5 Mike Keil (who had all 3 goals) to make it a 7-5. With all of the domination at face-off X by Bleckley, 7-5 would be the closest this game would get. The brothers of Steinbrenner: Parker and Carson Kaleo took over the game and helped Steinbrenner close out the first district championship in School history. Beating Wharton 12-7. Parker Kaleo at Defense helped the team with 10 out of 11 man-down defensive stops of Wharton’s Man-up offense that couldn’t seem to capitalize on the amount of extra man opportunities they had. (1 out 11 on man-up) To add to Parker Kaleo’s leadership on Man-down, he lead the team in take a way’s and individual clears (with one ending in an assist). Head Coach John Kuebrich of Steinbrenner says: “I love the competitive nature the Kaleo brothers bring to the Steinbrenner program. When one seems to be at odd ends in the game, the other is their to pick the brother up… while pushing the team to remain focus” Steinbrenner will need this focus to roll over to April 15th, when they play Plant high school (district 15 winner) for regional finals. The last game Steinbrenner and Plant played might as well of been a play-off game in it’s on right. Stretching into double overtime with plant winning 6-5. The regional finals between the hungry, up and coming program in Steinbrenner and the power house in south Tampa, known as Plant…will be a edge of your seat lacrosse game.
