Tampa Drops First Game at Home on the Season

3/13/2012 TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Tampa lacrosse team drops its third game of the year to Colorado Mesa University, 7-4. Tampa goes to 6-3 on the year as Colorado mesa goes to 2-1. Colorado Mesa’s defense came out with ample pressure on Tampa from the beginning of the game all the way to the final whistle. At the end of the first period, CMU held a 1-0 from a goal by Kyle Wollenhaupt. UT turned the ball over six times in the first. Austin Pridham made it 2-0 Mavericks at the 10:32 mark of the second. Less than a minute and half later Daniel Caddoo added a man-up goal to extend the lead to three. With 3:31 remaining in the half, A.J. DeSimone put the Spartans on the board with his 17th of the season. Douglas Weisbecker had the assist on the goal. At halftime, Tampa led in shot with 16, but trailed by two. The next three goals were scored by Colorado Mesa, which put them up 6-1. It was not until the 6:55 of the fourth period that UT was able to cut into CMU’s five goal lead. James McAuliffe scored his third of the season unassisted. Caddo for the Mavericks completed his hat trick minutes later to make it 7-2. In the last three minutes of the game the Spartans scored two more but would not have enough time to mound a significant comeback. Ryan Becker and Kyle Hemrick scored the third and fourth goals for Tampa, which Kevin Castle recorded the assist on the last goal. Tampa finished the game with 38 shots, 21 which were on goal, but committed 18 turnovers.
