  SPARTANBURG, S.C. (February 18, 2011) – The Rollins women’s lacrosse team took to the field for their season opener, trouncing Converse College 22-3 on Friday afternoon in Spartanburg, S.C.  Rollins commences their 2011 campaign at 1-0, while the Valkyries begin their season with a record of 0-1. A total of 12 Tars placed shots between the pipes.  Katy Tyszko led the team in scoring with four goals and two assists for six points on the afternoon.  Sophie Townsend was close behind with three goals and two assists, while freshman Kelly Thayer ignited her Rollins career with a hat trick and assist for four points in her first collegiate game. Erica Pagliarulo, Marissa Giannerini, and Cat Kelley each netted two goals and an assist, while Tori Snow, Katie Palasz, Tricia Grant, Sarah Ann Showell, and Caroline Lamere earned one goal apiece.  Overall, Rollins had 10 of their 22 goals assisted. In cage for the Tars were freshmen Elyse De Lisle and Rachael Kokomoor.  De Lisle kicked off her collegiate career with two saves and allowing only one goal in her time out on the field in the first half.  Kokomoor closed out the game in the final 30 minutes, making one save and allowing two goals. The Valkyries saw scoring efforts from Lacey Bevilacqua, Courtney Cambra, and Lindsey Reuss.  Converse saw Tabitha Chamblee and Jordan Taylor between the pipes, with Chamblee collecting three saves before Taylor took over with 18:06 remaining in the first half and closed out the game with 12 saves. Rollins sprinted out to a 6-0 lead with 19:03 before the half before Converse could put a point on the scoreboard.  At the break, Rollins held onto a dominating 14-1 advantage and carried their momentum into the second half where they outscored the Valkyries 8-2. The Tars led in shots 50-12, and dominated their adversary in ground balls 41-21 with Snow and Grant earning five ground balls apiece.  The Tars won 22-of-26 total draw controls, with Snow winning a game-high five.  Rollins was successful on 15-of-17 clear attempts, but shot poorly from the hash marks as they went 3-for-7 on free position attempts.
