SAINT LEO, Fla. – Behind a six-goal, two-assist effort from freshman attack Matt Obermeyer (Winter Springs HS), the Saint Leo men’s lacrosse team (4-1, 2-0 DSC) remained undefeated in the Deep South Conference as they downed Wingate University, 11-8, Wednesday evening from University Field. Joining Obermeyer in the Lions’ scoring column was Connor McBride as he added two goals and two assists. George Proechel (Lake Highland Prep) punched in a goal and led the squad with three assists while Alex Monteferrante notched his second goal of the season. Meanwhile, Wingate’s Colin O’Donoghue led the Bulldogs with four goals and one helper. Derek Watts found the target twice while David Lee and Garrett Kendall also found the back of the net. The game began as a defensive struggle as the two teams spent almost the first nine minutes searching for their first goal. Despite the early offensive struggles, both squads eventually found their rhythm. The Lions and Bulldogs used a two and a half minute span late in the first quarter to do majority of the damage.  After Obermeyer opened the scoring, Monteferrante improved the Lions’ lead to 2-0 with an unassisted blast. O’Donoghue got the Bulldogs on the board and cut the lead in half as his unassisted shot made the score 2-1.  Proechel returned the favor 14 seconds later when McBride found the Lions’ sophomore open in front of the goal. With time winding down in the first, Watts slotted the first of his two goals past the Lions’ goalkeeper as the Bulldogs trailed by just one, 3-2, going into the second quarter. In the second, McBride increased the Saint Leo lead to 4-2 off a feed from Proechel. Not backing down from a challenge, Wingate’s Kendall and Watts answered the call with two consecutive goals to tie the game at four apiece. However, Obermeyer netted his second goal of the night with 38 seconds to play in the first half to take a 5-4 lead into the locker room. Out of the halftime break, Obermeyer picked up where he left off as he swelled the SLU lead to 6-4 on his 15th goal of year.  O’Donoghue swung momentum back towards the visitor’s with back-to-back blasts midway through the third quarter to tie the game at six. Despite the Bulldogs’ best efforts to contain Obermeyer, the freshman scored the final two goals of the period to pace Saint Leo with an 8-6 advantage heading into the final 15 minutes. In the fourth, O’Donoghue pulled Wingate to within one, 8-7, with 9:48 left in regulation. Saint Leo did not let the Bulldogs get any closer, however, as Ray Ferrera, Obermeyer, and McBride scored the next three goals to give the Lions a commanding four goal advantage. With the outcome of the game nearly decided, Wingate’s Lee registered the final tally to bring the score to its eventual 11-8 final.  In the face-off circle, the Lions duo of Mike Del Buono and Ty Trombley won 15-of-24 challenges. Bryce Sneed did the majority of the damage for Wingate as he won eight of the nine face-offs for the Bulldogs. In goal, Lions ‘keeper Patrick Berry collected 12 saves as he improved to 3-1 on the year. On the opposing side, Danny Dlugozima posted 14 saves in 60 minutes of action. The loss dropped his record to 3-3 overall. Saint Leo will return to action on Saturday, March 12 when they host Catawba in Deep South Conference action. Face-off is set for 1:00 p.m. from University Field.
