Sailfish Fall In Offensive Shootout Against Anderson
by Assistant Director, Athletic Communications
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic women’s lacrosse team stayed home for their second home match this week as they hosted Anderson today. After getting off to a fast start, the Sailfish fell behind and were unable to catch back up to the high-scoring Trojans before falling 23-17. PBA’s record falls to 2-4 overall with the defeat.
What has become a trend for the ‘Fish so far this season, they got off to s fast scoring start and jumped out to an early lead. PBA outscored the Trojans 8-3 in the opening 15 minutes of play led by Rachel Delate who secured a first quarter hat trick. Fellow PBA attackers Ella Howlin and Addyson Johnson added two goals of their own while Sara Metheny and Addyson Johnson each found the back of the net. The Sailfish outshot Anderson 11-7 in the quarter but PBA would struggle with draw controls throughout, making it difficult to gain possession as the game went on.
The visitors completely flipped the switch on the Sailfish in the second quarter, going on an 11-1 run that would propel them into the lead for good. Anderson dominated the play, outshooting PBA 19-4 in the quarter. PBA looked for a spark in the midst of the run as they made a change in between the pipes, bringing in Georgia Karns for starter Courtney Rausch. Rausch finished the game allowing ten goals while making two saves while Karns had slightly more success, making eight saves while allowing 13 goals. Regardless of who was in net for the ‘Fish, they were under too much pressure from the Anderson attack and draw control unit as they won 26-of-42 draws in the circle. Olivia Larges and Johnson scored the final two goals of the half to end the Trojan run but PBA trailed 14-11 at the break.
The ‘Fish battled in the third quarter, working their way back into the game when a Megan Jackson goal made the game 16-15 Trojans halfway through the third quarter. From that point on though it was all Anderson as they closed the half on a 7-2 scoring run to win by six goals.
The Sailfish had five players score in double-figures, led by Delate’s six goals to take her season total to a team-high 23 goals. Bella Marchiano did a strong job distributing in the offense as she led PBA with four assists. Defensively, the Sailfish had to make up for the absence of standout defender Meghan Lyons. Isabelle Tapia and Katie Caras did their best to fill the void as Tapia led the team with three ground balls and Caras had a team-high five caused turnovers.
PBA returns to action on March 14 when they play host to North Greenville. The Crusaders are 2-5 on the season and play at Lynn before making their way to West Palm Beach to face the ‘Fish.
