BOX SCORE

LAKELAND, Fla. – The 19th-ranked Florida Southern men’s lacrosse team welcomed in Peach Belt Conference opponent Young Harris College Saturday afternoon. The Moccasins used a dominating performance to come away with a 26-6 victory on Berend Field, the largest goal output since 2021 when the Mocs scored 27 versus Palm Beach Atlantic.

The victory is the third-straight for Florida Southern and improves FSC’s record to 5-2 on the season. The Mountain Lions of YHC fell to 1-8 on the year.

The 26 goals scored for the Mocs is the fifth-most in program history in a single game while the 71 shots are the fourth most in a single-game and the second most this season by the potent FSC offensive attack.

Sophomore Matt Flammenspeck scored a career-best six goals in the victory, surpassing his previous high of five. Flammenspeck took just seven shots in the contest, all on goal, with six beating the keeper. Senior Sean Nolan and freshman Nolan Tighe tied for the team lead with seven points each in the victory. Nolan added to his career record at FSC with seven points off of three goals and four assists. He now has five hat tricks through six games this season. His four assists were top on the team and his three goals moved him to within 12 goals of the career goals scored record at FSC. Tighe scored four goals while finishing with three assists.

Graduate student Jay Minor added five points to the effort including his second hat trick of the season to go along with a pair of assists. Freshman Caiden Wiech more than doubled his season goal total as he went from two to five with his first career hat trick. A total of 12 Mocs saw the ball go to the back of the net while 10 handed out at least one assist in the contest.

Senior Nick Shannon, who ranks nationally in caused turnovers per contest, led the defense with five CTs while scooping up a pair of ground balls. Graduate student midfielder Craig Connor controlled the middle of the field while causing three turnovers by the Mountain Lions. In total, the Mocs caused 19 of YHC’s 30 turnovers in the contest.

Freshman Jacob Czyz had his best performance of the season at the ‘X’ as he won 19-of-26 (.731) attempts versus YHC. Two other Mocs saw action at the faceoff going a combined 3-of-8 (.375). Czyz also led the team with 11 ground balls.

The Mocs used five goalkeepers in the contest with junior Michael Simone earning his third-straight start and third-straight victory. Simone played just shy of 40 minutes of action with six saves. He is now 3-0 on the season. Graduate student Maxwell Freestone played the next 12-plus minutes with four saves while three others combined for seven-plus minutes with just one shot on goal during that span.

FSC scored eight goals in the first, second and third quarters before pumping the breaks in the fourth and outscoring the Mountain Lions 2-1 over the final 15 minutes of action.

Following the opening eight minutes of action, FSC led just 3-2 but a barrage of 11-straight goals by the Mocs to close the first and open the second blew open the game and the Mountain Lions could never recover.

FSC will now begin preparation for another non-conference home contests as the Mocs welcome in second-year program Flagler on St. Patrick’s Day, Friday, March 17 for a 7 p.m. contest.
