Chargers late surge leaves Saints with a loss

ST AUGUSTINE – Geraint Shaw and Luke Burton scored three goals apiece to lead Flagler College in its “Senior Day” game this afternoon against The University of Alabama in Huntsville in a Peach Belt Conference men’s lacrosse game at the Flagler Lacrosse Field. The Saints fell short 17-15 with Pete Fabrizio leading the Chargers with four goals.

The Saints now sit 4-7 overall and start Peach Belt play 0-1. The Chargers advance to 5-6 for the season and 1-0 in the PBC.

UAH pulled through with five consecutive goals to start the fourth quarter to create a lead, 16-13, they maintained until the end.

The game started out with a tied first quarter and remained neck-and-neck the rest of the first half. Shaw managed to score in the last two minutes of the first half in order to put the Saints over the edge, 9-8.

The Saints defense did not disappoint with Blake Gonzalez collecting seven ground balls and Matt Mitrega winning nine faceoffs and picking up five ground balls. Saints goalie Nate Lehr made 11 saves.

Tommy Peer recorded six saves for the Chargers and Ty Cassidy collected six ground balls.

The Saints will hit the road for their next game on April 6 at 1 p.m. to face PBC opponent Lander University.
