#4 Mocs Sail Past #17 Tars in Winter Park

WINTER PARK, Fla. – No. 4 Florida Southern women’s lacrosse remains unbeaten in Sunshine State Conference play after traveling to No. 17 Rollins and left Cahall-Sandspur Field at the Barkers Family Stadium with a 20-11 win.

Florida Southern (11-3, 4-0 SSC) started the game with six straight goals in the first before piling on another nine in the second quarter for 15 first-half goals. The Moccasins matched the Tars (11-4, 3-3 SSC) in the third frame with four goals before finishing with the 20th goal in the fourth quarter.

The Mocs used 10 different goal scorers in the win, led by Madison Tare with four goals in the game. Sammy GorrasiAbby McFerren, and Jackie Stoller all contributed three goals as Hannah Hale finished with two goals and two assists.

Olivia ManghisiEllie GriffinEmma DudleyMaria Reeves, and Camden Frissora all added one goal in the road win. Stoller dished out a team-best three assists to finish with six points ahead of Tare, Hale, and McFerren’s four points.

Twenty-two draw controls went in the favor of Florida Southern where Kolby Cohen led the way with a game-high five, one ahead of Olivia Gianakos and Audrey Cannelli (4).

McKenzie Gaghan improves to 11-3 on the year after earning the win in cage, having played 32:41 with three saves before turning the game over to Rylie Rittberg for the final 27:19. Rittberg tallied five stops in goal.

Rollins’ Caroline Gastonguay and Aleksa Allen score three goals to tie for the team lead in total points with three, along with Jorie Alf.

After seven minutes of scoreless play, Madison Tare broke through for Florida Southern for the 1-0 lead. The Moccasins would rattle off five more for a 6-0 lead thanks to Hannah HaleJackie Stoller (2), Abby McFerren, and Sammy Gorrasi.

The Tars would call a timeout to kill the Mocs’ momentum. Rollins would use the stoppage to regroup and then answered with three straight to close the first quarter, 6-3.

Rollins opened the second with a Caroline Gastonguay goal to cut the game to a two-goal game, 6-4. A minute later, Tare would get the Mocs attacking again, 7-4, as Florida Southern went on a 7-0 run to push the game to 13-4 with five minutes to play.

The Tars would see Gastonguay score another with 4:05 to play but Cohen and Stoller each would find Gorrasi for a pair of goals to close the half, with Florida Southern leading 15-5.

The second half started much like the first, seven minutes of scoreless play before the Tars scored back-to-back goals to cut it to 15-7. Both teams would trade goals over the next four minutes as Tare would answer each of the Tars’ goals up to the 2:23 mark.

Florida Southern would close the frame with a pair of goals as Abby McFerren found Olivia Manghisi on the crease before Hannah Hale found Maria Reeves cutting to the goal for a 19-9 lead, starting the running clock once again.

The fourth quarter took nearly 10 minutes for someone to score. Rollins would be the first team to score in the final frame with 6:19 to play stopping the clock but four minutes later, Emma Dudley scored what was the final goal for Florida Southern to get the game to 20-10. Jorie Alf scored the game’s final goal with 0:42 to play for the final 20-11.

No. 4 Florida Southern will welcome No. 20 Florida Tech (7-7, 1-3 SSC) on April 20 at 7:00 p.m. for the final home game of the regular season at Berend Field.
