Embry-Riddle Men’s Lacrosse Falls 14-10 to Visiting Chargers

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida – The Embry-Riddle men’s lacrosse team dropped a back-and-forth matchup with the visiting Chargers of Alabama-Huntsville on Friday night at the ERAU Lacrosse Field. The Eagles (1-1) cut a five-goal fourth-quarter deficit down to one with six minutes to play before the Chargers (3-1) spoiled the Blue and Gold comeback attempt with three scores for a 14-10 victory.
The Eagles out-shot the Chargers 45-41, and controlled the faceoffs, 19-8, but the final five minutes of the night were owned by UAH after the Eagles scored four consecutive goals in less than six minutes.
The visitors struck for the first two goals, but the home team immediately answered with goals from Gage Poindexter and Coleman Jacobs, the latter of which was the first of Jacobs’ game-high four goals of the game.
UAH took a 3-2 lead into the second quarter, and then made it a two-goal advantage a few moments into the period. But Jacobs quickly got the Eagles back even with scores off passes from Michael Forte and Lars Hoeg. The Eagles couldn’t find the back of the net over the last nine minutes of the half however, and the Chargers pushed two goals past Lucas Fraser in net, taking a 6-4 cushion into the second half.
Gavin Madden’s first goal of the season came with just under 11 minutes to play in the third, getting ERAU within 7-5, but then the Chargers scored the next three goals to take a commanding 10-5 lead.
Marcus Needham’s goal with 98 seconds to go in the third stopped the Charger run, but UAH got the goal back early in the fourth, going up 11-6.
Jacobs’s fourth score of the contest came at 12:01 in the fourth, and that started a huge six-minute stretch that saw Christian Hofer score twice, and then Joe Anderson score to take what was once a five-goal deficit down to just one at 11-10.
The Chargers got the desperation goal they needed to stop the Eagle momentum, and then the Eagles were forced to play a man down after a penalty at the four-minute mark. UAH would score two more times over the final two minutes to account for the 14-10 final.
Fraser made nine saves in goal, while Zak Welsh of UAH managed 16 saves against the Eagle offensive attack.
Embry-Riddle will host Montevallo on Sunday, Feb. 20 at the ERAU Lacrosse Field. Game time is slated for 12 p.m.
