Creekside’s 12-4 win over St. Augustine is the type of result that would belie the competitiveness and physicality that was on display Monday night.
The Knights (13-2) never trailed but were never comfortable until the waning moments of a boys lacrosse contest that may not rise to the point of a rivalry but is one the two schools desperately want to win.
In the process, St. Augustine’s seven-match winning streak was stopped by a Creekside team that is ranked in the top 10 by both FloridaaLacrosseNews.com and laxnumbers.com.
The match was one of the final tuneups for next week’s all-important district tournaments.
Creekside is the No. 2 seed in District 6. St. Augustine is the No. 1 seed in District 7. Only the district champion advances to the FHSAA playoffs.
St. Augustine (11-4) still has its goals in front of it: Win district, win a playoff game and give the No. 1 team in Florida all it wants in a potential regional semifinal.
Creekside coach Jason Alford said his team did not panic and was able to grind out a win. Creekside scored six unanswered goals in the final eight minutes to turn an intense encounter into one where the Knights could exhale before the final horn sounded.
