As the final seconds ticked off the Naples High School scoreboard, the hometown girls lacrosse team Thursday night continued battling Benjamin School.
The Buccaneers were about to hand the Golden Eagles their first loss of 2019, yet Naples didn’t appear defeated. Then the siren signaled the end of the contest, and the Naples players ran to their goalie, many jumping up and down with their arms in the air.
They lost 15-5 in the regional final — the first in program history — on their home field, yet few would call the season anything but a success with a final record of 22-1.
“It’s unfortunate our season had to end,” Naples coach Jayson Saunders said. “I’m proud of the way our kids fought regardless of what the score was. They were just focused on taking the next right step.”
