SSC Athletes of the Week: April 9 – 15

  Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week Andrew Kew / University of Tampa / Jr. / Attack / Oakville, Ontario Kew earns his second Offensive Player of the Week award this season after leading Tampa in SSC wins over Rollins College (17-5) and Palm Beach Atlantic University (27-5). The junior from Oakville, Ontario recorded four goals and three assists against the Tars while adding a pair of caused turnovers and a ground ball to his stat sheet. In the win against Palm Beach Atlantic, Kew recorded six goals and three assists as the Spartans cruised to victory. The junior attackman leads the Spartans in both goals and assists this year with 42 and 16, respectively. Tampa now moves to 12-3 overall and 4-1 in SSC play. Men’s Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week Daniel Flock / Florida Tech / Jr. / GK / Ellicott City, Maryland Flock earns Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season after an excellent week in goal for the Panthers. Although he faced 18 shots, Flock needed to make just four saves in Wednesday’s 17-3 win over Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Flock then made 21 saves while facing a season-high 43 shots in the 15-14 road victory over Florida Southern College on Saturday to help the Panthers earn a school-record eighth consecutive win and move to 6-0 in SSC play. Florida Tech becomes the first team in SSC men’s lacrosse history to win six league games in a regular season. Panthers are now 9-4 overall and 6-0 in SSC play. Men’s Lacrosse Specialist of the Week Dryden Brous / Lynn / Jr. / FOS / Ocean City, Maryland Brous earns Specialist of the Week for the fourth time this year after a great week for the Fighting Knights. For the week, Brous took 43 draws, winning 37, for an incredible 86.0 face off winning percentage. He also picked up 32 ground balls, averaging 16.0 per game. Against Palm Beach Atlantic University, Brous went 18-for-19 on face offs while adding a game-high 15 ground balls and his fourth goal of the season. Brous’ 15 ground balls are tied for second all-time in school history, falling two shy of his career-best and program record set earlier this season. At No. 6 Saint Leo University, he had another phenomenal day at the face off X, taking all 24 draws in the game and winning 19. He did almost all of the work himself, picking up 17 ground balls. Brous’ 17 ground balls tie his own program record set earlier this season against Florida Southern College. His 19 face off wins are four shy of his school record and are tied for fourth-most in a game all-time. For the season, Brous now leads the country in ground balls per game (11.27) and ranks second in the nation in face off winning percentage (78.2). Women’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week Kallie German / Rollins College / Jr. / Midfield / Centreville, Maryland German is awarded Offensive Player of the Week for the second time after an impressive week for the Tars. The junior earned a new program record for overall points in a game as she scored seven goals and added three assists for a 10-point outing against Saint Leo University on Saturday. German fired off 16 shots and 10 shots on goal, helping the No. 6 Tars defeat the Lions in SSC action. German scored the game-winner against the Lions. Her 10th point of the game came on an assist with 12:53 remaining in the second half, besting the previous record of nine points in a contest held by eight different Tars throughout the program’s 11-year history. Rollins now stands at 13-3 overall and 3-2 in SSC play. Women’s Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week Sam Keesey / Florida Southern College / Jr. / Defender / Bel Air Keesey is awarded Defensive Player of the Week after recording six draw controls, and two caused turnovers against Saint Leo University as the Moccasins won the game 18-3. The junior managed to log five draw controls in just ten minutes versus Belmont Abbey College Her top game of the week came against Lenoir-Rhyne University as she had nine draw controls, three caused turnovers, and two ground balls. For the week, the junior collected 20 draw controls and caused five turnovers to help the Moccasins go 3-0 during the week. Florida Southern now sits at 16-1 overall and 4-1 in conference play.   Big East  

GATORS GRAB TWO BIG EAST WEEKLY HONORS

    GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of Florida women’s lacrosse team had two freshman garner BIG EAST weekly honors. Sabrina Cristodero earned defensive player of the week honors while Shannon Kavanagh earned the freshman of the week award as announced by the conference office on Tuesday. In a game that pitted two, the final two undefeated teams in the BIG EAST against each other, Cristodero marked the then-conference leader in goals Grace Gabriel. Cristodero shut Gabriel down and put an end to her 38-game goals and points streak, limiting Gabriel to just two shots. Cristodero ended the contest with a game-high eight draw controls and helped Florida secure sole possession of first-place. This is Cristodero first defensive player of the week award in her career and third overall honor. Kavanagh earned her first career BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honor after helping the Gators topple previous unbeaten Marquette. In the game against the Golden Eagles Kavanagh sparked the Gators offense with seven total points on three goals and four assists. She added five draw controls to her game totals and was 1-for-1 in free position attempts. This is Kavanagh’s second career BIG EAST weekly honor. On the year Florida has earned 12 BIG EAST weekly awards and this marks just the second time all season the undefeated Gators have earned multiple weekly awards in a single week. Florida will be on the road this week with games scheduled in Cincinnati and Denver. The Gators will play the Bearcats on Wednesday at noon and the Pioneers on Saturday.
