District 27 – Stoneman Douglas and Pine Crest Again Vie for Top Spot

Written on . Posted in , , , .

For this season we’ll see the same battle between Stoneman Douglas and Pine Crest for the district title but neither of them seem to be able to get past likely first round opponent STA (although STA will continue to see the rising AH-Plantation program get a little closer this year in the rear view mirror).

Stoneman took the district title in OT over Pine Crest in a district that saw the addition of 3 new varsity programs in Coral Springs (which years ago was a solid program), Coral Springs Charter and Coral Glades).  Hopefully those three will find some traction over time or this district will have some issues down the line with its’ current nine team size.

I don’t have to recap how difficult Stoneman’s path was last year.  Just winning the district really should suffice as a success.  As they look forward it will be time to see if the hard work of the past 5 years continues to produce consistency in results.  Pine Crest has long been one of the consistent programs in the state.  Calvary Christian is one to watch down the line as the number of players getting involved has taken a leap up the last few years and they will eventually work their way to the high school level.  Cardinal Gibbons was on the path to potentially consistent Top 25 ranking but seems to have leveled off some.  Rudy Williams has moved on to another coaching position in another state and Tres Johnson takes over there.

North Broward Prep has an experienced new coach in Rich Carter but he’ll need a few years to make some inroads while Taravella has struggled to gain traction.

Unfortunately, Calvary Christian is the only school to send in their questionnaire so far, so I’ll lead with them and hope the others send theirs in for inclusion.

Head Coach Adam Bond has given us the following info on his team’s season to come:

What are your expectations this season for the team?

We’ve been building slowly but steadily over the last few years. While we lost some key players to graduation, we have significant talent in every position, and we are optimistic about the upcoming season

Who are the returning players who will make a difference this season?

Jr. Attackman #23 Jason Thomfohrde, Jr. Middie #4 Luke Davis, Jr. LSM #25 Nelson Telemaco, So. Attackman #22 Noah Horne

What players do you expect to step up this year that didn’t get much playing time last year?

We have two 8th graders who will likely start for us this year, who both show amazing promise: #6 Tyler Asbate, Attack, and #21 Ian Carvajal, Goalie

What are the games you are really looking forward to this season?

After some competitive off season scrimmages and tournaments, we are really looking forward to putting a little pressure on the teams to beat in our district.
