FLN’s Top 15 For Class 1A & 2A for the Week Ending 3/21/2021! What’s Old is New Again!

Written by Lee Roggenburg on . Posted in , , , .
A quieter week across the state, but not without some fireworks. For St. Thomas it was tough to handle prosperity, as Saint Andrew’s gathered the matchup of #1’s and also fell to Benjamin on Friday 7-5, as the Raiders offense has gone flat. Lake Mary ran out to a 6-1 lead on Friday and had to rally for the 12-11 win over Lake Highland. Cardinal Mooney had to rally in the 4th for the win over Riverview, only to be handled the next day by Jesuit. And most importantly, FLN now has a YouTube channel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tomorrow’s Morning Coffee will hopefully be the last one on the Periscope/Twitter platform as I’ve cleared my calendar tomorrow after work in order to cram the knowledge needed to operate the new channel.   Here’s the LINK to that channel.  PLEASE Subscribe so that we can get off to a flying start with it.  In the first couple of days we’ve seen 80 Subscribers, but I’m really greedy about this and want to see double that by the end of the day tomorrow.  Even if you think you will not watch anything, Subscribe anyhow so you will see our channel whenever you go to YouTube.

Rob Kavovit

The Florida lacrosse community is feeling pain within its’ ranks again this week as Jensen Beach assistant coach Rob Kavovit passed away suddenly at age 45.  Rob was a star player for Syracuse where he was a senior mentor to a freshman named Matt Sofarelli, who went on to be the head coach at Jensen Beach, with Rob on his staff.  After Matt left to go to the Pine School, Rob stayed on at Jensen with Brent Mahieu and also coached youth in Martin County. I only talked a few times with Rob over the years and that certainly seems to be my loss based on the things I’ve seen written.  Here’s a LINK to the TC Palm article on his passing. I’ve asked Matt and Brent to write a story about their memories of Rob and hopefully we’ll have it for you this week. There has been a GoFundMe set up for the family and that link is HERE

East is East and West is West

On my trip to the West Coast the thing that struck me the most was that crowds are bigger on the Gulf Coast than in the Southeast. I like the larger crowds more. So do the players. It’s time.  Open up more fans in the stands. Start treating us like adults again. But there was another thing I noticed on my West Coast swing . . . parents still yelling too much at the refs. What’s the point?  Have any of you ever gotten a call changed from the stands? Of course not. So give it up already. Might even save you on some blood pressure medicine!

A Cool Use for the Submit Game Recap Feature!

I received a Game Recap for a MIDDLE SCHOOL GAME and will be putting it up in a few days so it won’t get lost in an avalanche of press releases. Thanks to those who have used this feature in the past and will in the future! An easy way to get your school some ‘pub’!

Remember How Great the Ponte Vedra-Plant Game Was?  Here’s Lax.com’s Video Highlight Reel!

Did I mention we have a new YouTube channel? Have you Subscribed yet?   The Underdog Upset of the Week I’m not sure we really had a big one this week with the game schedules being reduced but two close calls caught my attention this week. First, St. Stephen’s Episcopal took Cardinal Mooney to a 12-11 game, just falling short, while Gulliver had to fight off a game Westminster Christian for the 10-8 win a week ago. Close but not quite! But congrats to making a heck of a run at it for both teams!

Remember Last Week’s Goalie Highlight Video?  It went NATIONAL!

Lee’s 1970’s Cultural Flashback!

I KNOW some of you are waiting to hear from this, while others cringe and close their eyes . . . So in the spirit of fairness . . . if you WANT TO SEE THESE GO AWAY . . . 1,000 YouTube subscribers will DO THE TRICK. Get moving! But until then . . .   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YIxddzCsU8   Believe me, I can make this PAINFUL . . . 1,000 Subscribers or this stuff STAYS!

Okay, Time For The Polls!

This gets harder as we go along instead of easier. Covid interruptions, injuries, Spring Break trips . . . Teams knocking off each other. And we haven’t gotten to the second leg of the home and homes either. A few schools have really come on strong, but none of them like Jesuit of Tampa, which somehow started outside of my Top 15 in 1A . . . Oops. The last two games have shown them go on the road to TWO Top 5 ranked teams back to back and come away with statement wins. That gets rewarded . . . Belen Jesuit is also on the move this season, going unbeaten and taking down all their local rivals. Hmm, a good year to be a Jesuit? Certainly this year it is. But how about the flip side?  No other teams are more difficult to rank than Mitchell, Episcopal School of Jacksonville and Providence due to their schedules.  Episcopal and Providence finally see their first true test this Saturday at the Rivalry on the River as they face each other.  One of them will take the next step.  One difference between them is Episcopal will play Ponte Vedra while Providence does not this year so Episcopal can get one back with a good showing versus PV. Mitchell was trying to schedule Oak Hall but they couldn’t make it work so the best Mitchell can hope for if they can’t find a similar replacement is to show well in their likely first round FHSAA matchup with Plant.  Otherwise there’s just no way to justify a ranking. So, here we go!
