via FSC press release   SALISBURY, NC –  Florida Southern College men’s lacrosse finished up their first weekend of the season with a thrilling overtime victory on the road at Catawba College.The Moccasins (1-1) got off to a hot start as they went up 4-0 on the Indians (1-3) in the first quarter. However, the Mocs had to make a late comeback in regulation to force overtime, and Lucas Claude found the back of the net with 44 seconds to go in the extra period to lift Florida Southern to victory. Claude and Carson Wallace each scored three times, with Wallace tallying the game-tying goal with 3:38 to go in regulation and Claude scoring the game-winner on overtime. HOW IT HAPPENED • Florida Southern’s Justin Dunleavy opened the scoring as the Mocs jumped out to a 4-0 lead midway through the first quarter. In a span of three minutes, Catawba was able to put two in the back of the net to cut the Mocs lead in half with 1:38 to go in the first. Claude would strike for his first goal in the closing moments of the first period to give the Moccasins a 5-2 lead after 15 minutes of play. • The second quarter proved to be on that the Moccasins would rather forget as they watched Catawba claw their way back with three-straight goals to tie the game at 5-5 with 10:32 remaining in the first half. Midway through the second, Dalton Simpson scored his first goal of the season to put the Moccasins back on top (6-5). Catawba would tally two more goals before the halftime buzzer to take a one-goal lead into the locker room. • The third quarter was very back and forth as the Mocs and Indians traded goals. Three minutes into the half, Kevin Dyer tied the game at 7-7 with his second goal of the season. Four minutes later Dyer would again tie the game, this time at 8-8 for his second goal of the game. In the final three minutes of the third Kyle Silverstein and Logan Brubaker, both helped the Mocs tie the game back up. by answering a pair of Indian goals to make it 10-10 heading into the fourth. • Catawba opened the scoring in the fourth quarter, but thanks to back-to-back goals from Claude and Wallace the Mocs were able to regain the lead. Two minutes later Catawba would even the score at 12-12 and they would take its final lead of the game with just under four minutes to play in regulation. The Mocs wouldn’t let that derail them from leaving the Tar Heel State without a victory as 19 seconds later Wallace scored his third goal of the game to notch the scored at 13-13, a scored that would stick until the end of regulation. • The Indians wasted no time in the extra period, firing off four shots in the opening minutes, but none were able to come near the goal. After the Indians were called for a penalty late in overtime, Claude was able to make Catawba pay by scoring the Mocs’ fifth man-up goal of the game to grab the win and give Florida Southern its first win of the season. INSIDE THE NUMBERS • Florida Southern improved to 2-4 all-time against Catawba and snagged their first road win against the Indians to go to 1-3 when facing Catawba on the road. • Florida Southern led the Indians in shots (57-39), shots on goal (31-28), faceoffs won (20-9) and ground balls (50-25). However, the Indians finished with a 22-19 edge in clear attempts and Indians’ goalie Kevin Geiger was spectacular in defeat, notching 24 saves on the day. • Claude and Wallace led the Mocs with three goals apiece while Wallace also tallied an assist. Dyer and Silverstein each recorded two goals and two assists, while Austen Lison led the Mocs with 10 ground balls. Kevin Horwitz won 15-of-21 of his faceoff attempts, and Mike Greco made eight saves on 21 shots faced. UP NEXT • The Mocs will play their first home game of the season on March 4th at the brand-new new Moccasin Field at Barnett Athletic Complex as they host Emmanuel at 4 p.m., and will play host to Wingate on March 6 at 12 p.m. to cap off a two-game homestand.
