FSC Women: Balanced Attack Leads Mocs Past Rockhurst 19-7 In Season Opener

  via FSC press release   LAKELAND, FL – Florida Southern College women’s lacrosse opened the season on a 9-0 run en route to a 19-7 victory over Rockhurst on Thursday night at Moccasin Field. The No. 3 Moccasins (1-0) used goals from 11 different players to keep the Hawks (0-2) still searching for their first victory of 2019. Grace Glinecki lead the offense with three goals on the evening. Florida Southern’s first four goals came on free position shots from Sarah Grady (2), Maliah Benedetto, and Glinecki. Clare Goessling led the Hawks with four goals in the final 35 minutes of the game. HOW IT HAPPENED  Grady put the Mocs on the board just 22 seconds into the game, after being awarded a free position shot, giving the Mocs an early lead they would never surrender. M. Benedetto, a transfer from Monroe CC, made her presence known for Florida Southern as she scored her first two goals as a Moc, in the first seven minutes. Florida Southern’s defense stepped up to cause a turnover on all three of the Hawks successful clears in the first eight minutes, in addition to causing turnovers on two more RU clear attempts. • Rockhurst and Florida Southern would trade goals over the next two minutes as Hannah Miller put the Hawks on the board at the 13:16 mark in the first half. Marina Jozokos put the Mocs up 10-1, before Maddi Scheipeter doubled the Hawks goal total to make it 10-2, Florida Southern. After being awarded a free position shot attempt, Glinecki would put her third shot on the evening past the Hawks goalkeeper (11-2). After Glinecki’s goal, Florida Southern would close out the first half on a 3-2 run to take a 14-4 lead at the half. • Freshmen Brenna Smith opened the scoring in the second half as she put one past the Hawks’ Molly Dunham for her first collegiate goal. The Mocs would go on a 3-0 run over the next ten minutes as freshmen Lizzy Lynch, who recorded her first collegiate point on a Dani Bursinger goal in the first half, continued the scoring with her first goal on a free position shot at 16:59 in the second half. Bursinger would follow with a free position goal of her own (9:26) and Catherine DeKorte would take a feed from Julia Couch for her first goal of the season. Goessling, who scored the final three goals for the Hawks, buried two free position shots past the Mocs goalkeeper. INSIDE THE NUMBERS • Florida Southern improved to 2-0 all-time against Rockhurst. The Moccasins have won 20 straight regular-season, non-conference games dating back to the 2017 season. • Seven Moccasins finished the night with multiple goals. Patricia Werker made three saves in her freshmen debut as she totaled 18:38 minutes in net for the Mocs. • Florida Southern picked up 41 ground balls to 28 by Rockhurst. The Mocs won 22 of 27 draw controls. UP NEXT • Florida Southern will close out the month of February when they host No. 2 Adelphi (Feb. 24). March will begin with a 1 p.m. game against Seton Hill (March 2) before heading to North Carolina for three games. In North Carolina, the Mocs will take on a trio of South Atlantic Conference teams in Catawba (March 7), Wingate (March 8), and Queens (March 10).
