via JU press release   RICHMOND, Va. – Despite holding the hosts to just one goal in the first and third quarters, along with tying an NCAA record in the second, Jacksonville University men’s lacrosse fell just short of completing a comeback against Southern Conference foe Richmond, 14-12, Saturday afternoon at Robins Stadium. “Today was a loss that I know is not going to be easy to forget. For the second straight week, we found a way to come back from a deficit in the second half and even take the lead early in the fourth. Unfortunately, silly turnovers and lack of attention to detail allowed Richmond to take control late in the fourth,” said head coach John Galloway. “As I shared with the guys in the locker room, we have to take more pride in the Monday through Friday attention to detail if we want to take down a team like Richmond. We are going to challenge our guys to live like champions when no one is watching. I’m excited for that challenge.” Tied at 8 apiece heading into the final quarter, the Dolphins (5-6, 3-2 SoCon) pulled ahead as senior Hunter Forbes made it 9-8 in favor of Jacksonville just 13 seconds in. Richmond (7-5, 4-1 SoCon) then added two more goals – both assisted by Ryan Lee – to take a one-goal lead, 10-9, at the 11:56 mark. Sophomore Dwayne Mattushik and freshman Jeremy Winston tied the game on two separate occasions at 11:56 and 8:45, respectively, but the Spiders notched three of the last four goals to steal the game, 14-12. “I’m very proud of Hunter Forbes, Hunter Sells, and all of our offensive personnel for giving us opportunities to stay in the game,” added Galloway. “I know our defense will be hungry to get back to work as we head to Furman next week for a pivotal conference match up. This team has showed fight all year long, and I expect an upgrade in that this week.” Jacksonville got on the board just six seconds into the game as Forbes won the face off and fired in a shot to put the Dolphins up, 1-0 early on. The hosts answered back, but Jacksonville took the lead on a miscue from a Spider defenseman rolled into the goal at the 4:15 mark. Senior Shawn Ewert found freshman Gavin Dembeck to push the Dolphins to a 3-1 advantage with 12:33 showing in the second quarter before the Spiders used a 5-0 run to double up the Dolphins. 6-3, with 1:38 to go before halftime. A trio of goals were scored inside the final 45 seconds of the half – as senior McLean Chicquen (0:45) and freshman Dwayne Mattushik (0:01) sandwiched a Spider goal (0:04) – to come back within two, 7-5, heading into the second half. The three seconds between Richmond’s Sean Menges (0:04) and Mattushik (0:01) ties an NCAA record for fastest consecutive goals scored by opposing teams, set by Manhattan’s Nick Silva and Delaware’s Matt Aldrich on March 9, 2003. Richmond pushed ahead with the first goal of the third at 13:22, but Jacksonville tied the game up as sophomore Alec Drosos posted a pair of tallies around Dembeck’s second, to dead lock the game at 8-8. Forbes finished the day with a team-high three points (2 goals, 1 assist), and won 21-of-28 face offs with 13 ground balls. Mattushik, Dembeck, Drosos, and Chicquen all had two goals apiece, while Winston added one. Junior Eric Applegate dished out a pair of assists, with Ewert and freshman Dixon Smithhanding out one helper each. Junior Hunter Sells finished the day with 11 saves in the loss. Ryan Lanchbury (3g, 2a) and Mitch Savoca (4g, 1a) led the Spiders, while Blake Goodman finished the day with 13 saves between the pipes. The Dolphins return to action next Saturday, April 21 when they visit Furman. Opening face off is set for noon.
