via JU press release   JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The 2018 Moe’s Lacrosse Classic weekend started off in exciting fashion for Jacksonville University women’s lacrosse, as 10 different Dolphins found the back of the net to fend off Ohio State University’s 5-0 rally in the second half, but it was freshman Megan Prescott who buried the game winner in overtime to lift the Dolphins over the Buckeyes, 17-16, Friday evening at D.B. Milne Field. “We had a really good distribution of scorers this game, from starters to reserves. The draw in the second half was key to win, especially in the overtime situations; those were critical possessions. We really took advantage of our free positions. That was key today,” stated head coach Mindy McCord. “Our biggest weapon is the diversity that we have. This game, we were able to spread the wealth. It’s difficult to match up when we have 10 people scoring. We have a lot of depth that will keep building and it will be hard to scout.” The Dolphins faced a man-down situation heading into overtime, as a yellow card was handed to the hosts following the Buckeyes’ game-tying goal with just 2.2 seconds remaining in regulation. Showing its resiliency, Jacksonville found a way to win despite a pair of shots that barely missed their mark in the first overtime period. With 3:38 showing on the clock, sophomore Jackie Benedict caused a critical turnover to win back possession for the Dolphins and set up Prescott’s eventual game-winning opportunity. Looking to get a shot off in front of the crease, Prescott drew a foul from a Buckeye defender. With 2:00 left in the second overtime period, the Ellicott City, Md. native set up at the top of the 8-meter line and buried a shot past the ankles of Ohio State goalkeeper Jill Rizzo and avenge last season’s one-goal loss to the Buckeyes. Added McCord, “I was glad that we rallied and fought back. We stayed steady in the final nine minutes and it showed a lot of poise; we managed the clock well. I’m very excited, it’s great to be tested. [Ohio State] is a very good team; they’re very well-coached, very aggressive and physical, and to be able to play a competitive 64 minutes with a team, I think both teams can learn a lot from that. It’s nice to be on the victory side of that and have some momentum going into Florida. “[Prescott] showed a lot of poise and confidence to be able to step up and do what she needed to do to put the ball in the net.” Jacksonville recorded nine less turnovers than Ohio State and held the advantage in nearly every statistical category, including shots (37-23), draws (16-15), free position goals (10-15 compared to OSU’s 6-9). Senior Ashtyn Hiron led the Dolphins six points (4 goals, 2 assists) and won season-high 11 draws, while graduate goalie Emily Poelma earned the win to improve to 2-1 between the pipes. Ohio State’s Liza Hernadez totaled five goals to lead the visitors, while Rizzo finished the day with eight saves. The Dolphins return to action next Wednesday, Feb. 28 when they travel to Gainesville to take on Florida at 7 p.m
