MCLA: Florida State Falls to Clemson 11-8 in SELC Quarterfinals

from FLN Special Correspondent Anthony Cicio   Last Friday night, Florida State was tripped up by Clemson in the first round of the conference tournament. The Tigers managed to slide past the Seminoles with a final score of 11-8. FSU finished the season with a record of 10-4 and a No. 16 national ranking in the MCLA Coaches Poll. Senior Davis Goodman opened up the scoring on the night. Goodman initiated a dodge from behind the goal and managed to score with a quick, left-handed wraparound. Clemson responded two minutes later with a goal of their own. Both teams would trade goals in the remainder of the first quarter, tying the game at two a piece with a minute to go. In the final second of the first quarter, Sophomore Quinn Lowdermilk found time and room for a step down shot but it was deflected in front of the cage by a defenseman. Lowdermilk stuck with the shot, scooped it up, and scored with 0.4 seconds on the game clock. The Seminoles retained a 3-2 lead after one quarter of play. Just before the start of the second quarter, Florida State was issued a 3-minute non-releasable foul for an illegal stick. Clemson took full advantage of the opportunity, scoring two goals during the penalty and taking a 4-3 lead. The Tiger defense blanked the Seminoles offense in the second frame, holding them to four shots and no goals. Clemson would score two more goals before the end of the second frame, giving them a 6-3 lead at the half.     The third quarter wasn’t much different. Clemson’s offense continued to roll, while the Seminoles struggled to find a rhythm. The Tigers scored in transition to start the quarter. Sophomore Kyle Wooten responded with a left handed shot from 14 yards that found top shelf, making the score 7-4 in favor of Clemson. The Tigers would dump in two more before the end of the third quarter, giving them a 9-4 advantage headed into the final quarter of play. Florida State made a strong push in the last quarter but three and a half minutes in penalties was too much to overcome. Clemson scored the first goal of the quarter on an EMO, extending their lead to six. The Seminoles actually managed to make the score 10-8 in part to goals by Wooten, Reid Smith, and two by Davis Crayner. The Tigers scored an empty net goal late to make the score 11-8. Clemson’s strong play was highlighted at the face off X by Senior Brian Hadley. Hadley was 14 for 23 on the draw. Jared Stapleton and Anthony Cicio both registered 10 saves on the evening for Clemson and Florida State, respectively. Florida State’s season came to a close Friday night with a final record of 10-4. The Seminoles finished the season 5-1 under interim head coach Mike McGraw. Clemson fell the following evening to Virginia Tech by a score of 15-5. The Tigers finished their season with a record of 14-3.
