Saint John Paul II Cruises Past Jensen Beach 20-4 in Opener for Each

Since the Stoneman – Saint Andrew’s game was postponed I needed to fill a need to see a game and get my mind in gear for the season and thought this would be an interesting matchup since both of these programs have experienced both success and rebuilding in the past few years. What I found last night was two teams going about that rebuild at very different stages. Coach Andy Bolger’s SJP II team has gone through their growing pains and has an experienced team ready for a long-desired District championship while Coach Brent Mahieu’s Jensen Beach squad is facing the daunting task of fielding a very young team, that showed last night that they will need to work hard, as this will be a year of looking for improvement in all facets of the game. There’s really not a lot to suspense about the game itself, as the score indicated. The first quarter settled the outcome early. SJP II got off 28 shots at the JB freshman goalie, Patrick Barry, who held in well for his first varsity start. But 28 shots is 28 shots, and though only 12 actually found the net, 7 of those entered the twine and after the first it was 7-0. And frankly, the rest of the game was played at a pace that can be best described as ‘let’s work on everything’, by both sides. SJP II could have made this a lot worse if more shots hit the cage, and Barry certainly made some nice first half saves, but the Eagles shot 60 times overall and 30 were on target.Coach Bolger ran deep into the bench as 10 players scored goals and none of them were named starters Timmy D’Antuono and Michael Kennedy, who both focused on feeding and combined for 7 assists between them. 13 of the 20 goals were assisted and Coach Bolger will certainly be happy with that. On the other side Jensen’s senior middie Jack Spillman scored all four of their goals with one of them assisted by Marlin Wakeman. Before I get into the game recap (as always, when I write up a game like this it will be more of a statistical list) I’d like to post SJP’s version of their pump-up video, which was tastefully done. For those schools out there who are thinking of doing one too, pay attention to the content of this one. No questionable language and no questionable content . . . violate either and I don’t use it! One thing I wondered as the final panel came up and the #Resistance displayed was the generational difference between the kids and I. They were thinking about the hash tag and I was thinking about the Borg . . . Resistance is Futile.Maybe we could meet in the middle? #ResistanceIsFutile?
